Background and Objectives: The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may cause acute respiratory failure, but also remains responsible for many other pathologies, including electrolyte disorders. SARS-CoV-2 infection causes disorders in many systems and can disrupt water homeostasis with thirst and appetite abnormalities. Dysnatremia affects prognosis, and may be associated with mortality in patients admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2. ⋯ Hypernatremia was correlated with diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, and a longer duration under mechanical ventilation. Conclusions: Hypernatremia was an important risk factor in ICU patients hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 infection, which was also affected by the treatment regimens given themselves. This complex relationship underlies the importance of proper electrolyte management, especially in patients who were under severe stress and organ failure.

Background and Objectives: Breast cancer is one of the most widespread cancers among the female population around the world and is curable if diagnosed in an early stage. Consequently, breast cancer screening imaging techniques have greatly evolved and adjusted over the last decades. Alongside mammography, sonoelastography became an important tool for breast cancer detection. ⋯ On the other hand, the nodules less likely to be part of the false positive group exhibited the following characteristics: a regular shape (OR = 0.27), homogenous consistency (OR = 0.42), and avascularity (OR = 0.22). Conclusions: Older age, high BMI, patients with a breastfeeding history, and those who exhibit the following specific nodule characteristics were most often linked to false positive results: large tumors with posterior acoustic shadowing and high elasticity scores, accompanied by reactive adenopathy. On the other hand, homogenous, avascular nodules with regular shapes were less likely to be misdiagnosed.

Background and Objectives: Metastatic spinal cord compression represents a substantial risk to patients, given its potential for spinal cord and/or nerve root compression, which can result in severe morbidity. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a diagnostic-therapeutic algorithm developed at our hospital to mitigate the devastating consequences of spinal cord compression in patients with vertebral metastases. Materials and Methods: The algorithm, implemented in our practice in January 2022, is based on collective clinical experience and involves collaboration between emergency room physicians, oncologists, spine surgeons, neuroradiologists, radiation oncologists, and oncologists. ⋯ To enhance the robustness of our results, long-term studies are required. Moreover, the single-center study design may limit the validity of the findings. Further multicenter studies would be beneficial for validating our results and exploring underlying factors in detail.

Background and Objectives: We aimed to investigate the carriage of colistin-resistant genes among both patients with a history of antibiotic exposure and apparently healthy adults with no recent healthcare contact. Materials and Methods: Stool swabs were collected from healthy people, and specimens were collected at the infection foci from the patients. Eleven primer/probe sets were used to perform the Multiplex Real-Time PCR assay with the QuantiNova Multiplex Probe PCR kit for screening the carriage of colistin-resistant genes (mcr-1 to mcr-10) and 16S rRNA gene as internal control. ⋯ Twenty-three healthy people (24.0%) were positive with at least one colistin-resistance encoding gene, and the mcr-10 gene was the most frequent (27.0%), followed by the mcr-1, mcr-8, and mcr-9 genes, where the prevalence was 24.3%, 21.6%, and 13.5%, respectively. No person was positive with the mcr-2 and mcr-5 genes. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced surveillance, infection control measures, and stewardship interventions to mitigate the spread of colistin resistance in Vietnam.

Preterm-born children are susceptible to problems of adaptation in the early neonatal period, as well as the emergence of consequences due to the immaturity of the respiratory, cardiovascular, and especially cerebrovascular systems. The authors searched PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and Web of Science for articles that were available in their entirety and published in English between 1990 and 2024 in peer-reviewed journals using keywords relevant to the manuscript topic. Analyzing the requested studies and manuscripts, adequate articles describing the stated problem were used. ⋯ When a baby is born, it leaves its protected environment and very often requires intensive treatment to survive. In these circumstances, the immature nervous system, which is in a sensitive stage of development, is overloaded with numerous external stimuli, continuous light, noise, inappropriate positioning, and repeated painful reactions due to necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and the unavoidable absence of the mother and the family, which cause stress that threatens proper programmed development. Minimally invasive therapeutic procedures and the presence of parents during hospitalization play a significant role in reducing the consequences for a premature child.
