Prognostic Value of Inflammation Scores and Hematological Indices in IgA and Membranous Nephropathies: An Exploratory Study.
Background and Objectives: Systemic-inflammation-based prognostic scores and hematological indices have shown value in predicting outcomes in various clinical settings. However, their effectiveness in predicting outcomes specifically for IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and membranous nephropathy (MN), the most common primary glomerular diseases diagnosed by kidney biopsy, has not been thoroughly investigated. Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective, observational study involving 334 adult patients with biopsy-proven IgAN (196 patients) and MN (138 patients) from January 2008 to December 2017 at a tertiary center. ⋯ In MN, NLR, PLR, and RDW are predictors of mortality but not kidney survival. These findings underscore the need for disease-specific biomarkers and indicate that systemic inflammatory responses play varying roles in the progression and outcomes of these glomerular diseases. Future studies on larger cohorts are necessary to validate these markers.

Background and Objectives: This study investigated the links among quality of life, life satisfaction, depression, and aging anxiety in menopausal middle-aged women. The objective was to establish an understanding of how these factors are associated, which would be the foundation for developing programs aimed at enhancing the health and well-being of menopausal women. Materials and Methods: An online survey was administered to 993 middle-aged women, aged 45 to 65, residing in Seoul, Korea. ⋯ In addition, there was an indirect effect-mediated by depression (95% CI = 0.025, 0.058) and life satisfaction (95% CI = 0.038, 0.064)-between menopausal quality of life and aging anxiety. Conclusions: The present study demonstrated a direct effect of low menopausal quality of life on aging anxiety and a mediating effect of low depression and higher life satisfaction on aging anxiety. These results suggest the need for programs to increase menopausal quality of life, decrease depression and improve life satisfaction to reduce aging anxiety.

Background and Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship between cardiometabolic risk factors and atrial fibrillation (AF) and the simultaneous presence of AF and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the Pakistani population. Materials and Methods: A total of 690 subjects were enrolled (n = 230 patients with AF, n = 230 patients with AF and MetS, and n = 230 controls). The associations between cardiometabolic parameters and AF with and without MetS were analyzed by univariable and multivariable binary regression analyses. ⋯ A decrease in uric acid levels and an increase in sodium levels by 1 unit measure increased the probability for MetS and AF by 23.2% and 7.5%, respectively. Conclusions: Cost-effective and routinely measured parameters, i.e., BMI, FBG TG, GFR, and sodium levels, can be reliable indicators of AF, whereas serum uric acid and sodium levels are independently associated with AF and MetS in the Pakistani population. Timely recognition and the control of modifiable cardiometabolic risk factors are of great significance in the prevention of AF development.

Effects of Exercise Type on Muscle Strength and Body Composition in Men and Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Background and Objectives: There are typical differences in body composition and distribution of muscle fiber types between women and men. However, research investigating the effects of exercise based on sex differences is limited, and studies examining sex differences in physiological adaptations according to exercise type are scarce. We aimed to compare the effects of exercise types on muscle strength and body composition in men and women through a meta-analysis. ⋯ Conclusions: Concurrent training is the most efficient type of exercise for men, as it is effective in increasing upper- and lower-body muscle strength, increasing lean mass, and reducing fat mass. Resistance training is most effective in increasing muscle strength in females, whereas endurance training is most effective in reducing fat mass. However, it is difficult to corroborate these results because of the lack of study samples included in the analysis and the differences in exercise methods, participant age, and exercise duration.

Effects of Rehabilitative Exercise and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Muscle Morphology and Dynamic Balance in Individuals with Chronic Ankle Instability.
Background and Objectives: Muscle atrophy caused by chronic ankle instability (CAI) can incur muscle weakness, altered movement patterns, and increased risk of injury. Previous studies have investigated the effects of rehabilitative exercises and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on characteristics in CAI individuals, but few studies have examined their effects on foot and ankle muscle morphology. This study aimed to determine the effects of rehabilitative exercises and NMES on muscle morphology and dynamic balance in individuals with CAI. ⋯ Results: After six weeks, significant increases in morphology and dynamic balance were observed for all muscles except flexor hallucis longus (p > 0.05) in the intervention groups except for CG. However, no significant changes were observed in the CG (p > 0.05). Conclusions: These findings suggest that intervention programs may help prevent muscle atrophy and improve balance in CAI individuals.
