Background and Objectives: To evaluate the clinical findings of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency in prolonged jaundice and to determine whether the systemic immune inflammation index (SII), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) can be used in the diagnosis of neonatal prolonged jaundice. Materials and Methods: Among full-term neonates with hyperbilirubinemia who were admitted to Medicine Hospital between January 2019 and January 2024 with the complaint of jaundice, 167 infants with a serum bilirubin level above 10 mg/dL, whose jaundice persisted after the 10th day, were included in this study. Results: G6PD activity was negatively correlated with NLR, SII, age, and hematocrit (Hct). ⋯ Conclusions: NLR and SII can be easily calculated in the evaluation of prolonged jaundice in G6PD deficiency has a considerable advantage. NLR and SII levels may contribute by preventing further tests for prolonged jaundice and regulating its treatment. It may be useful to form an opinion in emergencies and in early diagnostic period.

Health Impacts of Pre-eclampsia: A Comprehensive Analysis of Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes.
Background and Objectives: Hypertensive disorders, particularly pre-eclampsia, pose significant risks during pregnancy, affecting both maternal and neonatal health. The study aims to analyze short- and long-term health implications for mothers and their children, comparing those with pre-eclampsia to those without, to improve understanding of risk factors, diagnostic markers, and outcomes. Materials and Methods: This retrospective observational study involved 235 patients, 98 with pre-eclampsia and 137 without, monitored from 2015 to 2018 at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the "Pius Brînzeu" Emergency County Clinical Hospital in Timișoara, Romania. ⋯ Conclusions: The study highlights the significant short- and long-term health impacts of pre-eclampsia on both mothers and their children. Early monitoring, intervention, and comprehensive management are crucial in mitigating these risks. These findings underscore the need for personalized care strategies to improve health outcomes for affected individuals.

Background and Objectives: Pulmonary embolism (PE) incidence has been increasing in the last 10 years. Computed thoracic pulmonary angiography (CTPA) had a major role in PE diagnosis and prognosis. The main purpose of this study was as follows: the prognostic value of a CTPA parameter, pulmonary artery obstruction index (PAOI), in PE risk assessment and the predictive accuracy of biomarkers, D-dimer and cardiac Troponin T (c-TnT), in 7-day mortality. ⋯ Conclusions: PAOI was an important tool for PE risk assessment. D-dimer and c-TnT were valuable predictors for 7-day mortality in PE. PAOI (imaging parameter for PE extent) and D-dimer (biomarker for PE severity) as well as PAOI and c-TnT (biomarker for myocardial injury) were strongly correlated for the entire PE sample and for DVT, AF, COPD, and COVID-19 patients.

Background and Objectives: We studied the clinical significance of an amplitude decrement and disappearance alarm criteria in transcranial motor-evoked potential (MEP) monitoring during surgeries on extramedullary tumors at the cervical spine with reference to postoperative morbidity. Material and Methods: We diagnosed and surgically treated fourteen patients with intradural extramedullary ventral or ventrolateral lesions to the cervical spinal cord in the Clinic of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital St Ivan Rilski from January 2018 to July 2022. Eight cases were diagnosed with schwannoma, and the remaining six had meningiomas. ⋯ In the remaining cases, MEPs were stable during surgery with no clinical deterioration of the motor function. Conclusions: The decremented MEP criteria corresponded to postoperative motor deficit, whereas the improvement of the same parameters after decompression implied future recovery of preoperative motor deficits. The combination of different MEP criteria is likely to be helpful when tailored to a specific case of ventral or ventrolateral extramedullary lesions in the cervical spine.

Background and Objectives: The radial forearm free flap (RFFF) is the most commonly used flap for head and neck reconstruction. However, complications at the donor site are its major drawbacks. We aimed to identify the patient comorbidities and factors that predict donor site complications after RFFF. ⋯ Clinicians should pay particular attention to wound healing strategies in patients with hypertension. Additionally, better neuropathy care is recommended to achieve sensory recovery after RFFF in patients with diabetes. Using a skin graft with ADM could be a method to alleviate neurological symptoms.
