Interleukin-18 induces angiogenic factors in rheumatoid arthritis synovial tissue fibroblasts via distinct signaling pathways.
Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a proinflammatory cytokine implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study was undertaken to examine the role of IL-18 in up-regulating secretion of the angiogenic factors stromal cell-derived factor 1alpha (SDF-1alpha)/CXCL12, monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1)/CCL2, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in RA synovial tissue (ST) fibroblasts, and the underlying signaling mechanisms involved. ⋯ These data support the notion that IL-18 has a unique role in inducing the secretion of angiogenic SDF-1alpha/CXCL12, MCP-1/CCL2, and VEGF in RA ST fibroblasts, via distinct signaling intermediates.

Validation of a short form of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index function subscale in hip and knee osteoarthritis.
A short version of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) function scale has recently been developed to enhance the applicability of the scale in routine practice and clinical research for patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis. The goal of the present study was to validate this short form. ⋯ The WOMAC function short form has a low rate of missing data and is a responsive, reproducible, and valid measure. The mean SF score was 4 points higher than the mean LF score.

US national prevalence and correlates of low back and neck pain among adults.
To estimate the US prevalence and psychological and health behavior correlates of low back pain and/or neck pain. No current US national prevalence estimates of low back and neck pain exist and few studies have investigated the associations between low back and neck pain, psychological factors, and health behaviors in a representative sample of US community dwellers. ⋯ Low back and neck pain are critical public health problems. Our study supports the idea of a multidimensional approach to examining low back and neck problems and suggests the need for further research to address potentially modifiable psychological factors and health behaviors in these populations.

Delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of the meniscus: an index of meniscal tissue degeneration?
Much attention has been focused recently on the need for a better understanding of the mechanisms and natural progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA), particularly in its early stages. One technique that has been used to investigate early OA is delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of cartilage (dGEMRIC), where T1(Gd) (T1 value after penetration of the MRI contrast agent gadopentate dimeglumine [Gd-DTPA(2-)]) is used as an index of the molecular status of articular cartilage. The goal of this study was to explore T1(Gd) in the meniscus and its relationship with articular cartilage T1(Gd) in knee dGEMRIC image data sets. ⋯ While the biophysical basis for the T1(Gd) results relative to meniscus molecular structure needs investigation, these findings introduce a potential means of examining the time course of meniscal tissue change in the development and progression of arthritis.
