To evaluate, using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the prevalence of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) rupture in knees with symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA) compared with those without OA, and the relationship to pain and recalled injury. ⋯ ACL rupture is more common among those with symptomatic knee OA compared with those without knee OA. Fewer than half of subjects with ACL rupture recall a knee injury, suggesting that this risk factor for knee OA is underrecognized.

PEGylated interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin treatment in patients with hepatitis C virus-related systemic vasculitis.
Type II mixed cryoglobulinemia (MC) is a systemic vasculitis usually associated with hepatitis C virus (HCV), which may involve the skin, kidneys, and nervous system. Molecular evidence of antigen-driven B cell proliferation is definitively provided in HCV-associated type II MC, and HCV appears to be the key trigger. The present trial was established to investigate the efficacy of therapy with PEGylated interferon alfa-2b (PEG-IFN alfa-2b) plus ribavirin in patients with HCV-related MC vasculitis. ⋯ Treatment with PEG-IFN alfa-2b plus ribavirin can achieve a complete clinical response in most patients with HCV-related MC vasculitis. Complete clinical response correlates with the eradication of HCV and requires a shorter treatment period than that previously reported for IFNalpha plus ribavirin.

Rosiglitazone induces interleukin-1 receptor antagonist in interleukin-1beta-stimulated rat synovial fibroblasts via a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor beta/delta-dependent mechanism.
To study the potency of 2 peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) agonists, 15-deoxy-Delta(12,14)-prostaglandin J(2) (15-deoxy-PGJ(2)) and rosiglitazone, to modulate the expression of interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) in rat synovial fibroblasts. ⋯ Rosiglitazone stimulates IL-1Ra production by a PPARbeta/delta mechanism in activated rat synovial fibroblasts, further contributing to its potential antiarthritic properties and opening new perspectives for the modulation of inflammatory genes by specific PPAR agonists in articular cells.

ReviewRecommendations for musculoskeletal ultrasonography by rheumatologists: setting global standards for best practice by expert consensus.
To establish an expert consensus of best practice for rheumatologists performing musculoskeletal ultrasonography (MUS). ⋯ We have produced the first expert-derived, interdisciplinary consensus of recommendations for rheumatologists performing MUS. This represents a significant advance that will not only direct future rheumatology MUS practice, but will facilitate informed educational development. This is an important step towards the introduction of a specific training curriculum and assessment process to ensure competent rheumatologist ultrasonographers.
