Behavioral health disorders (BHDs) can often be exacerbated in the setting of cancer. We sought to define the prevalence of BHD among cancer patients and characterize the association of BHD with surgical outcomes. ⋯ BHD was associated with lower likelihood to achieve a postoperative textbook outcome, higher expenditures, as well as worse prognosis. Initiatives to target BHD are needed to improve outcomes of cancer patients undergoing surgery.

At the 2023 ATLS symposium, the priority of circulation was emphasized through the "x-airway-breathing-circulation (ABC)" sequence, where "x" stands for exsanguinating hemorrhage control. With growing evidence from military and civilian studies supporting an x-ABC approach to trauma care, a prehospital advanced resuscitative care (ARC) bundle emphasizing early transfusion was developed in our emergency medical services (EMS) system. We hypothesized that prioritization of prehospital x-ABC through ARC would reduce in-hospital mortality. ⋯ This is the first analysis to demonstrate a prehospital survival benefit of x-ABC in this subset of patient with severe injury and hemorrhagic shock. Standardization of prehospital x-ABC management in this patient population warrants special consideration.

Race and socioeconomic status incompletely identify patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) at the highest risk for screening, treatment, and mortality disparities. Social vulnerability index (SVI) was designed to delineate neighborhoods requiring greater support after external health stressors, summarizing socioeconomic, household, and transportation barriers by census tract. SVI is implicated in lower cancer center use and increased complications after colectomy, but its influence on long-term prognosis is unknown. Herein, we characterized relationships between SVI and CRC survival. ⋯ High SVI was independently associated with poorer prognosis after CRC resection beyond the perioperative period. Acknowledging needs for multi-institutional evaluation and elaborating causal mechanisms, neighborhood-level vulnerability may inform targeted outreach in CRC care.

We hypothesized that tumor- and hospital-level factors, compared with surgeon characteristics, are associated with the majority of variation in the 12 or more lymph nodes (LNs) examined quality standard for resected colon cancer. ⋯ Twenty-nine percent of the variation in the 12 LNs standard is linked to modifiable factors. The majority of variation in this quality metric is associated with non-modifiable tumor-level factors.

Firearm violence and school shootings remain a significant public health problem. This study aimed to examine how publicly available data from all 50 states might improve our understanding of the situation, firearm type, and demographics surrounding school shootings. ⋯ Despite heightened public awareness, the incidence of school shooting victims, wounded, and fatalities among children has steadily and significantly increased over the past 53 years. Understanding the epidemic represents the first step in preventing continued firearm violence in our schools.
