Life saving or life sustaining treatment may not be instigated in the clinical setting when such treatment is deemed to be futile and therefore not in the patient's best interests. The concept of futility, however, is related to many assumptions about quality and quantity of life, and may be relied upon in a manner that is ethically unjustifiable. It is argued that the concept of futility will remain of limited practical use in making decisions based on the best interests principle because it places such high demands on the individual responsible for decision making. This article provides a critical analysis of futility (in the context of the best interests decision-making principle), and proposes an ethically defensible notion of futility.

In a Norwegian study on how children aged 7-12 years cope during a period of serious illness within the family and on their quality of life at this time, several ethical questions became apparent. These were mainly concerned with the vulnerability of children during research, with their ability to make autonomous decisions, and with considerations regarding how to respect their right to confidentiality during the research process. In this article we approach these questions using our experience from this previous study, discussing them within the framework of theories of ethics and relevant research ethical guidelines. Finally, we discuss our experience in the light of the overall purpose of this article: how to deal with the ethical dilemmas that may appear during research involving young children.

Comparative Study
Korean nursing students' ethical problems and ethical decision making.
This Korean study replicated a previously published American study. The conceptual framework and method combined ethical enquiry and phenomenology. The research questions were: (1) What is nursing students' experience of ethical problems involving nursing practice? and, (2) What is nursing students' experience of using an ethical decision-making model? The participants were 97 senior baccalaureate nursing students, each of whom described one ethical problem and chose to use one of five ethical decision-making models. ⋯ The basic nature of the ethical problems was the students' experience of conflict, resolution and rationale. Using an ethical decision-making model helped 94% of the students. A comparison of the Korean and American results yields important implications for nursing ethics education, practice and research.

The purpose of this article is to examine the phenomenon of whistleblowing as it relates to a reconstructed case study of an erotic boundary violation that emerged from a clinical situation in forensic psychiatric nursing practice. The unique features of this case are illustrated with the help of a model for decision making. Although the ramifications of exposing a colleague are many, it is argued that, in this particular case, it was morally and ethically the right thing to do.

Modern nursing evolved out of a war. Today's nurses not only work in war zones the profession as a whole needs to consider its responsibility in caring for victims conflict and what its international duty is in preventing wars. ⋯ They need to be more politically active in conflict resolution and prevention at local, community, national and international levels. The purpose of this article is to address these issues from an ethical perspective and to suggest implications for nursing education and practice.
