Excess visceral adipose tissue (VAT) is associated with a cluster of metabolic abnormalities. A new dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA)-based VAT measurement approach, CoreScan™, computes VAT mass and volume within the android region of a total body DXA scan. However, there have been no reference values developed for this method. ⋯ VAT significantly correlated with HDL (R = -0.193; P = 0.03), glucose (R = 0.252; P = 0.005) and HOMA (R = 0.184; P = 0.049). In this study, we provide normal values of VAT mass and volume measured by DXA and determined for healthy, normal weight, Caucasian women aged 20-40 years. Even in such strictly selected population VAT correlated positively with insulin resistance and inversely with HDL.

Association between leisure time physical activity and metabolic syndrome: a meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.
A great number of prospective studies have investigated the relationship between leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk. However, the results have been inconsistent. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between LTPA and MetS risk. ⋯ A high level of LTPA was statistically associated with decreased risk of MetS in each subgroup. A higher level of LTPA is associated with a lower risk of MetS. These findings could have public health implications with regard to prevention of MetS through lifestyle interventions.

To retrospectively analyze the individual risk factors for radioactive iodine (RAI)-associated nausea and vomiting, and to examine the anti-emetic effect of ramosetron (5-hydroxytryptamine-3 receptor antagonist) in RAI therapy. Patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma who underwent first-time RAI therapy at Nagasaki University Hospital between January 2009 and 2013 were included (N = 81). As a routine treatment, all patients were administered 30 mg of domperidone per day. ⋯ Moderate to severe nausea (grade 2–3) was seen in 22.2 % of patients and associated with the dose of RAI per body weight (odds ratio = 1.046, p = 0.013), but not with the use of ramosetron, in multivariate logistic regression analysis. We have identified the dose of RAI per body weight to be an individual risk factor associated with moderate to severe RAI-associated nausea. This study failed to show that the combined use of ramosetron and domperidone reduced the frequency of RAI-associated nausea and vomiting.

While visceral adipose tissue (VAT) associates to obesity, there is debate for subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT). One explanation may be SAT subcompartments, superficial-SAT (sSAT) and deep-SAT (dSAT), recently recognized as independent depots. Our aim was to establish roles for sSAT/dSAT with obesity by examining the expression of proteins key to adipocyte metabolism. ⋯ In contrast, obese had 7-fold (P < 0.02) lower sSAT adiponectin, correlating to BMI (r = -0.5178, P = 0.027) and HOMA-IR (r = -0.4570, P = 0.049). Overall, sSAT and dSAT are distinct abdominal adipose tissue depots with independent metabolic functions. Between the two, sSAT shows clear independent effects that associate to obesity and its metabolic complications.

Congenital leptin deficiency, a rare genetic disorder due to a homozygous mutation in the leptin gene (LEP), is accompanied by extreme obesity and hyperphagia. A number of gastrointestinal hormones have been shown to critically regulate food intake but their physiological role in hyperphagic response in congenital leptin deficiency has not been elucidated. This study is the first to evaluate the fasting and postprandial profiles of gut-derived hormones in homozygous and heterozygous carriers of LEP mutation. ⋯ Interestingly, fasting leptin levels in heterozygotes were not significantly different from controls and did not change significantly following meal. Our results demonstrate that gut hormones play little or no physiological role in driving the hyperphagic response of leptin-deficient subjects. In contrast, fasting and postprandial levels of gut hormones in heterozygous mutation carriers were comparable to those of normal-weight controls.
