Chronic infection with Schistosoma haematobium may lead to serious complications, including bladder carcinoma. Although it is recommended that only bladder masses not regressing within 6 months after praziquantel intake should be investigated invasively, cystoendoscopy is still often performed at diagnosis even in the absence of further signs of concern. No prospective study so far evaluated the evolution of bladder lesions after treatment in case of no risk of reinfection, which could inform case management. ⋯ This is the first prospective, long-term follow-up study with ultrasound of patients with urinary schistosomiasis outside endemic areas. Mucosal masses in young patients regressed after treatment without recurrence, supporting the recommendation that invasive procedures should be avoided unless lesions or other symptoms/signs of concern persist for > 6 months. Further studies should assess the evolution of bladder lesions after treatment in larger populations, including older age groups, and, ideally, with parallel assessment of other biomarkers of urinary pathology and of residual S. haematobium active infection.

Early detection of imported multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is crucial, but knowledge gaps remain about migration- and travel-associated MDR-TB epidemiology. The aim was to describe epidemiologic characteristics among international travellers and migrants with MDR-TB. ⋯ MDR-TB is uncommon in traditional travellers. Purposeful medical migration may partly explain differences in time to presentation among different groups. Public health resources are needed to better understand factors contributing to cross-border MDR-TB spread and to develop strategies to optimize care of TB-infected patients in their home countries before migration.

Identifying UK travellers at increased risk of developing pneumococcal infection: a novel algorithm.
In 2016, the travel subcommittee of the UK Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) recommended that 13-valent PCV (PCV13) could be offered to travellers aged over 65 years, visiting countries without infant PCV immunization programmes. This study aimed to identify, collate and review the available evidence to identify specific countries where UK travellers might be at an increased risk of developing pneumococcal infection. The data were then used to develop an algorithm, which could be used to facilitate implementation of the JCVI recommendation. ⋯ To our knowledge this is the first attempt to categorize the risk to UK adult travellers of contracting pneumococcal infection in each country, globally. These findings could be used by national travel advisory bodies and providers of travel vaccines to identify travellers at increased risk of pneumococcal infection, who could be offered PCV immunization.

Schistosomiasis in non-immune travellers can cause acute schistosomiasis, a multi-systemic hypersensitivity reaction. Little is known regarding acute schistosomiasis in children. We describe acute schistosomiasis in paediatric travellers and compare them with adult travellers. ⋯ Children may develop acute schistosomiasis following short exposure to contaminated freshwater, demonstrating a high infection rate. Severity seems to be similar to adults, although children report fatigue less commonly and show lower eosinophil counts. The disease should be suspected in children with multi-systemic illness and in asymptomatic children with relevant travel history.
