Historically, skills training in performing brain ultrasonography has been limited to hours of scanning infants for lack of adequate synthetic models or alternatives. The aim of this study was to create a simulator and determine its utility as an educational tool in teaching the skills that can be used in performing brain ultrasonography on infants. ⋯ This pilot study supports the use of a simulator in teaching radiology residents the skills that can be used to perform brain ultrasonography.

The purposes of this study were to provide a case-based overview of various immune-mediated side effects detected by 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18 FDG) positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) in the patients receiving ipilimumab immunotherapy for treatment of malignant melanoma, and discuss the importance of recognizing immune-mediated side effects in the use of F-18 FDG PET-CT for monitoring therapeutic effects of ipilimumab on metastatic melanoma. ⋯ Various immune-mediated side effects were detected by F-18 FDG PET-CT in the patients subjected to immunomodulating therapy with ipilimumab. It is essential for the interpreting provider to recognize and differentiate abnormal FDG uptake associated with immune-mediated side effects from hypermetabolic malignant lesions when using F-18 FDG PET-CT for monitoring therapeutic effects of ipilimumab on melanoma lesions.

The academic educator's portfolio is a collection of materials that document academic performance and achievements, supplementing the curriculum vitae, in order to showcase a faculty member's most significant accomplishments. A decade ago, a survey of medical schools revealed frustration in the nonuniform methods of measuring faculty's medical education productivity. A proposed solution was the use of an academic educator's portfolio. ⋯ The service portfolio documents service responsibilities and highlight any service excellence. All portfolios should briefly discuss the educator's philosophy, activities, methods used to implement activities, leadership, mentoring, or committee roles in these respective areas. Recognizing that academic programs have differing needs, this article will attempt to provide some basic guidelines that may help junior faculty in diagnostic radiology develop their teaching, research, and service portfolios.

Studies reporting the safety of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with a cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) have mostly excluded examinations with the device in the magnet isocenter. The purpose of this study was to describe the safety of cardiac and thoracic spine MRI in patients with a CIED. ⋯ When a comprehensive CIED magnetic resonance safety protocol is followed, the risk of performing 1.5-T magnetic resonance studies with the device in the magnet isocenter, including in patients who are pacemaker dependent, is low.

CT-derived Biomechanical Metrics Improve Agreement Between Spirometry and Emphysema.
Many patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have marked discordance between forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and degree of emphysema on computed tomography (CT). Biomechanical differences between these patients have not been studied. We aimed to identify reasons for the discordance between CT and spirometry in some patients with COPD. ⋯ CT-derived measures of lung mechanics improve the link between quantitative CT and spirometry, offering the potential for new insights into the linkage between regional parenchymal destruction and global decrement in lung function in patients with COPD.
