This study was performed to evaluate the feasibility of using a joystick-controlled robotic needle driver to place a 22-gauge needle for nerve and facet blocks. ⋯ A robotic needle driver can be used to place needles accurately in the nerve and facet regions. Clinical studies are required to investigate the advantages and disadvantages of this system for interventional procedures involving needles.

The authors created a computerized database Web site enabling radiology residency applicants to utilize the experience of recent graduates from their school in maximizing the effectiveness of the residency advisory process. Objectives of this database Web site are (a) to provide general information regarding radiology as a specialty; (b) to allow students to gauge their chances of matching based on the experience of recent graduates from their school; (c) to provide advisors with a faster, more accurate assessment of a student's matching potential; and (d) to decrease the number of residency applications submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service. ⋯ This database Web site can provide a realistic comparison of a student's academics with those of previous applicants. Yearly analysis of school-specific data can help advisors follow applicant trends and modify their own advice. The database Web site can be easily duplicated and, if applied to other schools and specialties, could potentially benefit students nationally.

The authors performed this study to examine the relationship, if any, of a large number of measures of medical school performance with radiology residency performance. ⋯ Success on the ABR examination can be predicted by medical school success in preclinical courses, some clinical courses, and USMLE examination scores. Dean's letters, letters of recommendation, AOA selection during the senior year, and medical school prestige do not appear to predict future resident performance as reliably.

Comparative Study
Subsecond multisection CT of regional pulmonary ventilation.
To evaluate the adequacy of multibreath and single-breath stable xenon gas techniques to measure regional ventilation during cardiac-gated, high-speed, multisection imaging, the authors carried out a series of studies using electron-beam computed tomography (CT) and a recently introduced subsecond multisection spiral CT scanner. ⋯ With careful attention to lung volume and use of cardiac gating, it is now possible to correlate lung structure with function to a degree heretofore not possible.
