Web survey and embedded intervention on emergency department personnel perceptions of role in patient experience.
Investigators examined emergency department (ED) personnel's perceived job responsibilities and insights into determinants of patient experience. Surveys queried subjects on their perceptions of select clinical care-related actions (CCAs) to assess discipline-specific and service-specific CCA ownership and valuation. Investigators surveyed 153 of 634 ED personnel. ⋯ After exposure to survey queries, subjects indicated changing or re-considering how they communicate with patients (28.1%), deliver clinical care (20.2%), and arrange disposition/follow-up (20.3%). ED personnel's perceptions of CCA ownership and importance to patient experience were assessed. Subjects reported detectable levels of anticipated job-related behavioral changes traceable to survey-embedded intervention.

Invasive bacterial infections in a paediatric emergency department in the era of the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
To describe the characteristics of patients diagnosed with invasive bacterial infections (IBIs) in a Paediatric Emergency Department (PED) following the introduction of the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugated vaccine (PCV7). ⋯ In the era of PCV7, pneumococcus is the leading cause of IBI in PED. The introduction of PCV13 may lead to a very significant decrease in the IBI rate and meningococcus may become the leading cause of IBI.

Nonoperative management of anterior thoracoabdominal stab wounds in selected patients.
Nowadays, use of selective nonoperative management has decreased the incidence of nontherapeutic laparotomies in patients with anterior thoracoabdominal stab wounds. The safety of selective nonoperative management was investigated in these patients, not requiring emergency laparotomy. ⋯ This study showed that the proposed approach of selective nonoperative management in patients with anterior thoracoabdominal stab wounds is safe, feasible, and probably cost-effective.

Alpine skiing and snowboarding are popular winter sports. The practice of these sports is related to traumatic injuries, some of which are severe and/or life threatening. ⋯ Severe traumatic injuries occur among skiers and snowboarders, and preventive measures such as the use of helmets and educational programs, are necessary.

Are we prepared for a growing population? Morbid obesity and its implications in Irish emergency departments.
Two percent of the Irish population is morbidly obese with this figure expected to rise significantly. This survey aimed to establish the present logistical capacity of Irish emergency departments (EDs) to adequately cater for the bariatric patients. A telephone survey was carried out of 37 health service executive EDs over a 5-day period in October 2008. ⋯ One department had access to commodes, chairs, wheelchairs and trolleys from inpatient services. All departments had extra-wide blood pressure cuffs and 12 had a difficult airways trolley. Necessary infrastructure and equipment for bariatric patients is deficient in the majority of Irish EDs.
