The purpose of this study was to determine whether trauma patients requiring psychiatric medication who were admitted with positive alcohol or drug screen require more pain medications or sedation resulting in longer length of stay. ⋯ Psychiatric medication and positive drug or alcohol screens are associated with longer length of stay and increased respiratory complications. Factors influencing these outcomes need more clarification and prospective studies.

To assess the potential role of procalcitonin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6 and interleukin-8, in the prognosis of patients with sepsis. ⋯ Stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis showed serum procalcitonin level to be a valuable marker of sepsis severity, compared with the 15 other clinical, biochemical and bacteriologic variables tested.

We report here a patient with severe hypothermia (27 degrees C), who was successfully rewarmed by using a novel intravascular rewarming method (in combination with an airways rewarming method) through endotracheal tube.

Risk stratification of patients with ischaemic type chest pain assessed in the emergency department utilizing a point of care (POC) protocol. ⋯ Risk stratification by a specialist nurse utilizing a POC protocol is an appropriate means of assessing patients with chest pain.

We investigated whether frequency of avalanche accidents corresponds with the danger assessment given in avalanche hazard tables and with topographic factors of the avalanche origin. ⋯ Frequency of avalanche emergencies associated with outdoor leisure activities does not correspond with the danger forecast in avalanche hazard bulletins. There is need of a modified and regionally adjusted grading that makes allowance for experience and individual behavior of recreationists going in for backcountry leisure activities.
