To investigate the characteristics of blood lipid metabolism in twin pregnancy combined with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). This study retrospectively analyzed 96 cases of twin pregnancy and 232 cases of full-term singleton pregnancy. General data and blood lipid levels, including triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC), between twin and singleton pregnancies were compared. ⋯ The TG level in the PIH group was higher than that in the non-PIH group (p<0.05), while there was no difference in the TC level between them (p>0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that age was a risk factor for GDM and PIH in singleton and twin pregnancies. The lipid levels in twin pregnancy increased with the increase of gestational age, and the TG level in twin pregnancy complicated with GDM or PIH was higher than that in twin pregnancy without GDM or PIH, indicating that the blood lipid metabolism was related to the occurrence of GDM and PIH in twin pregnancy to some extent.

Over 25% of veterans with Gulf War illness developed chronic gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms of unknown etiology after they returned from deployment to the Persian Gulf. To determine the prevalence of delayed gastric emptying and its association with autonomic dysfunction in returning Gulf War (GW) veterans with chronic GI symptoms, we prospectively studied 35 veterans who were deployed to the Persian Gulf and developed chronic nausea, vomiting, postprandial abdominal pain, and bloating during their tour of duty and 15 asymptomatic controls. All veterans underwent 5 standardized cardiovascular tests to assess autonomic function. ⋯ Our results suggest that autonomic dysfunction and delayed gastric emptying are common in returning GW veterans with GI symptoms. Autonomic dysfunction was positively correlated with the severity of delayed gastric emptying and may account for the GI symptoms of nausea, vomiting, postprandial abdominal pain, and bloating. These new findings are important for an increasing number of veterans who are serving in the Persian Gulf and are at a high risk of developing GI disorders while deployed.

This is the first study to evaluate both the dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Twenty-nine patients with CLL and 20 controls were included in the study. The dynamic thiol-disulfide balance was determined by the newly developed colorimetric method by Erel. ⋯ In addition, IMA levels showed a positive correlation with OSI. This study highlights measurement of native and total thiol and IMA levels in patients with CLL for the first time. Dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis may contribute in the pathophysiological mechanism, and follow-up to disease in patients with CLL.
