Previously, many studies have reported changes in the gut microbiota of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). While CRC is a well-described disease, the relationship between its development and features of the intestinal microbiome are still becoming understood. ⋯ In this review we highlight various aspects of our understanding of the relationship between the development of CRC and the alteration of intestinal microbiome, focusing specifically on the role of F. nucleatum. As the amount of F. nucleatum DNA in CRC tissue is associated with shorter survival, it may potentially serve as a prognostic biomarker, and most importantly may open the door for a role in CRC treatment.

Integrating hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelets (HALP) score can simultaneously reflect systemic inflammation and nutritional status. Some evidence suggests its prognostic value in certain malignancies, however, the impact of HALP on individuals with osteoarthritis (OA) who were middle-aged and older remains unknown. This retrospective cohort study included 3,566 individuals from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2018. ⋯ The categorical analysis indicated that the lowest quartile of HALP score was related to higher all-cause mortality by using the highest quartile of HALP score as a reference (HR=1.46, 95%CI: 1.18-1.81). The association between HALP score with lowest quartile and all-cause mortality remained significant across different subgroups. This study suggested that HALP score was linked with all-cause mortality among middle-aged and older individuals diagnosed with OA, thereby indicating its potential as a reliable prognostic indicator for this patient population.

The etiology of vascular problems in beta-thalassemia has been linked to endothelial damage. Antiangiogenic proteins such as soluble Fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFLT-1) inhibit the signaling of vascular endothelial growth factor and placental growth factor, resulting in a decrease in the development of new blood vessels. Additionally, they promote the maturation of existing blood vessels and lead to endothelial dysfunction. ⋯ Regression analyses demonstrated a significant association between high sFLT-1 levels and the occurrence of PHT. Additionally, sFLT-1 (at a cutoff value of 8.84 pg/mL) demonstrated a sensitivity of 83.30% and a specificity of 80.0% in diagnosing thalassemic patients with PHT. In conclusion, beta-TM patients with elevated serum levels of sFLT-1 are at risk of developing endothelial dysfunction and subsequent development of PHT.

This study aimed to verify a novel potential indicator of disease progression in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients. Bone marrow samples were collected from 27 AML patients and 27 controls without hematological malignancies. Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1) expression in bone marrow samples was measured, and the association of PTBP1 with the French-American-British (FAB) classification, cytogenetics, risk stratification, and complete remission (CR) rate was analyzed. ⋯ Moreover, PTBP1 expression was associated with a poorer prognosis according to risk stratification and a lower CR rate in AML patients. In addition, PTBP1 expression was positively correlated with the expression of the proliferation marker Ki-67 and negatively correlated with the expression of the apoptosis marker p53 in AML patients. Overall, PTBP1 is a viable biomarker that contributes to the risk prediction and the determination of potential drug targets for AML.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has caused a major global health crisis, primarily targets the upper and lower respiratory tract. But infected individuals may experience different clinical symptoms, ranging from asymptomatic to critical. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) and Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) polymorphisms play a role in the immune response. ⋯ There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of TLR2 23bp indel genotype and allele distribution (p > 0.05). Our study results suggest that the VDR BsmI b allele may have a role in COVID-19 patients with symptomatic findings. These data need to be repeated in different ethnic and larger sample groups.
