The A disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM) family is involved in many vital cellular events, from proliferation to migration, and accumulated evidence suggests its increased expression in malignant tumors. In this study, we investigated ADAM17 expression in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its relationship with clinicopathological factors and survival. Immunohistochemical staining of ADAM expression was performed in 108 patients with NSCLC and in 54 control cases with no known malignant diagnosis. ⋯ Our study revealed that high ADAM17 expression significantly associated with OS and PFS in patients with NSCLC. ADAM17 may potentially be the area of a new targeted treatment strategy in NSCLC. Thus, routine evaluation of ADAM17 expression in patients with NSCLC may be a future consideration.

Antithrombotic treatment in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) poses a dilemma. We compared outcomes of dual antithrombotic therapy (DAT) (direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs)/warfarin + antiplatelets) vs triple antithrombotic therapy (TAT) (DOACs/warfarin, aspirin, and P2Y12 inhibitor) in this population. Multiple databases were searched from inception to December 17, 2023 to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing DAT vs TAT in patients with AF and ACS. ⋯ No difference was seen in the occurrence of MACE, MI, stroke, or stent thrombosis between DAT and TAT across all three durations of TAT. This is the largest pooled analysis comparing TAT to DAT stratified by the duration of antithrombotic therapy. Our results revealed that DAT was associated with reduced bleeding risk despite no difference in other outcomes.

Some studies have indicated an association between serum magnesium and anemia, but these are primarily limited to research on serum magnesium. Few studies have explored the relationship between the bioavailability of magnesium and anemia. This study explores the association between the Magnesium Deficiency Score (MDS) and anemia among elderly Americans using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2018. ⋯ The study suggests that improving the bioavailability of magnesium to reduce MDS may be a factor in preventing anemia in the elderly. This is the first study to explore the relationship between MDS and anemia in this population, highlighting the potential role of magnesium bioavailability in anemia prevention. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm these results and explore the underlying mechanisms.

The effect of pre-hospital use of renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEis)/angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs)) on clinical outcomes of hypertensive patients with COVID-19 has been questioned due to conflicting reports on this issue. After applying exclusion criteria, 175 COVID-19 hospitalized patients admitted to the Tishreen Hospital from January 1 to July 31, 2021 were retrospectively enrolled in this study. Baseline characteristics and in-hospital mortality rate were assessed between hypertensive (N = 91, 52%) and non-hypertensive (N = 84, 48%) patients, as well as between patients taking ACEis/ARBs and non-ACEis/ARBs within the hypertensive group. ⋯ Death in the non-ACEis/ARBs group was associated with decreased SPO2 and tissue/renal injury markers (LDH, CK, AST, urea, and creatinine). We concluded that hypertension is not a direct cause of poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients and that multi-organ damage is a significant indicator of death from COVID-19. RAS inhibitors could improve the survival of hypertensive COVID-19 patients.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has caused a major global health crisis, primarily targets the upper and lower respiratory tract. But infected individuals may experience different clinical symptoms, ranging from asymptomatic to critical. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) and Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) polymorphisms play a role in the immune response. ⋯ There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of TLR2 23bp indel genotype and allele distribution (p > 0.05). Our study results suggest that the VDR BsmI b allele may have a role in COVID-19 patients with symptomatic findings. These data need to be repeated in different ethnic and larger sample groups.
