Preptin is a peptide synthesized and secreted accompanied with insulin from pancreatic β cells. Here, we tested the hypothesis that serum preptin concentrations are correlated with diabetic nephropathy (DN). Our study was performed in a population of 234 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and 78 healthy subjects. ⋯ Simply linear regression analysis demonstrated a positive correlation between serum preptin and gender, body mass index (BMI), blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, ACR, and a negative correlation between serum preptin and glomerular filtration rate, metformin, acarbose treatment. Gender, BMI, and ACR were still positively correlated with serum preptin after multiple linear regression analysis. Our findings indicate that serum preptin concentrations are associated with renal function and DN.

Increasing evidence has shown that the immune system is involved in the schizophrenia development, with alterations in immune cell reactivity being one possible factor contributing to its pathogenesis. The purpose of the study was to evaluate in vitro the capability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from subjects with schizophrenia and controls to engage in spontaneous and phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated cytokine production. The concentrations of various cytokines (interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-17A, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interferon (IFN)-γ and IL-10) in supernatants from cultured PBMCs were measured using the cytometric bead array. ⋯ Correlation was observed between spontaneous production of IFN-γ and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale G subscore (which measures the general symptoms of schizophrenia) and between PHA-stimulated synthesis of IL-17A and G subscore. Our data confirm that the immune system dysregulation may underlie schizophrenia pathophysiology. There is a potential possibility that immunological tests could be used as a diagnostic, therapeutic and side-effects biomarker for schizophrenia, but further studies are needed.

Human papilloma virus (HPV) is now a well-known risk factor for head and neck cancer besides smoking and alcohol. Most studies mentioned that patients affected with high-risk HPV cancers have a better outcome, and many clinical trials are trying to prove that such group of patients can receive a different and less aggressive treatment than the HPV-negative group. Although such field has received great interest within different countries and continents, African and Egyptian populations are not yet well studied within the literature. ⋯ HPV positivity showed a statistically significant correlation with better disease-free survival (DFS), which was also maintained for OP cases. HPV is highly prevalent in OP and common oral cavity cancers in the Egyptian population. HPV positivity correlated significantly with better DFS, especially in OP cancers.

Therapeutic targets for the anemia of predialysis chronic kidney disease: a meta-analysis of randomized, controlled trials.
Anemia is one of the major complications in predialysis patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). A clearer cognition of the prognostic impact of hemoglobin (Hb) or hematocrit (Hct) target on the outcomes of predialysis patients with CKD is significant. This article aims to establish the suitable hemoglobin target to provide clinical guidance. ⋯ However, no significant difference was found in all-cause mortality (RR 1.10, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.23; p=0.11), stroke (RR 1.32, 95% CI 0.82 to 2.10; p=0.25) and treatment of renal replacement including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and renal transplant (RR 1.08, 95% CI 0.95 to 1.22; p= 0.23) between the higher hemoglobin group and the lower one. The results favor the higher hemoglobin target. To target the higher hemoglobin when treating predialysis patients with CKD may decrease the risk of transfusion without increasing the risk of death, stoke, and treatment of renal replacement.

Effect of acute exercise on postprandial endothelial function in postmenopausal women: a randomized cross-over study.
High-sugar intake may cause endothelial dysfunction. It is unknown if a bout of aerobic exercise improves endothelial dysfunction caused by a high-sugar meal in postmenopausal women. This study evaluated if prior aerobic exercise attenuates postprandial endothelial dysfunction in postmenopausal women. ⋯ In conclusion, prior aerobic exercise compared with NE did not affect FMD, blood glucose, insulin, ET-1 or NO concentrations, or insulin sensitivity following a high-sugar meal in postmenopausal women. Future studies should look at the effect of different EX intensities on meal-induced endothelial dysfunction in this population. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02919488.
