The study aimed to investigate the diagnostic role of multislice spiral CT (MSCT) combined with clinical manifestations and laboratory tests in acute appendicitis subtypes. Patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis were included for retrospective analysis and their clinical manifestations and MSCT signs were analyzed. The clinical manifestations of different subtypes of acute appendicitis, including simple appendicitis, suppurative appendicitis and gangrenous appendicitis, were compared. ⋯ There were statistically significant differences in body temperature and neutrophil percentage among the subtypes of appendicitis and they were lowest in simple appendicitis and highest in gangrenous appendicitis. There were statistically significant differences in appendix diameter and the surrounding exudate among the subtypes of appendicitis and they were lowest in simple appendicitis and highest in gangrenous appendicitis. Clinical manifestations and MSCT signs, especially body temperature, percentage of neutrophils and the surrounding exudate, might have significant diagnostic value in acute appendicitis.

Expanded hemodialysis (HDx) is an innovation that can increase the effectiveness of hemodialysis. The dialysis process is expected to promote more uremic toxins removal without causing significant hypoalbuminemia using the medium cut-off (MCO) membrane or also known as the high retention onset membrane. Compared with conventional membranes such as those of low-flux hemodialysis, high-flux hemodialysis, and hemodiafiltration, the MCO membrane in HDx is considered to be the closest to the physiology of the glomerular membrane. Several studies have shown the use of the MCO membrane in HDx provides clinical benefits and better outcome although further studies are needed to assess the long-term effect and greater impact for dialysis patients.

Patients with low baseline low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) but experiencing recurrent coronary revascularization events have been rarely investigated. In this retrospective cohort study, we enrolled patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with baseline LDL-C <55 mg/dL at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University between January and December 2017. Subsequent ischemia-driven coronary revascularization events and all-cause death were documented during a 4-year follow-up. ⋯ Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that a higher TG level (≥1.17 mmol/L, determined by receiver operating characteristic curve) was associated with increased risk of recurrent revascularization events than lower TG level (<1.17 mmol/L) (p=0.021). Female (HR 2.647, 95% CI 1.350 to 5.190, p=0.005) and previous atrial fibrillation (HR 3.163, 95% CI 1.403 to 7.132, p=0.006) were associated with increased risk of all-cause death. In conclusion, for patients undergoing PCI with baseline LDL-C <55 mg/dL, higher baseline TG can predict recurrent coronary revascularization events.

To investigate the characteristics of blood lipid metabolism in twin pregnancy combined with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) or pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH). This study retrospectively analyzed 96 cases of twin pregnancy and 232 cases of full-term singleton pregnancy. General data and blood lipid levels, including triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC), between twin and singleton pregnancies were compared. ⋯ The TG level in the PIH group was higher than that in the non-PIH group (p<0.05), while there was no difference in the TC level between them (p>0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that age was a risk factor for GDM and PIH in singleton and twin pregnancies. The lipid levels in twin pregnancy increased with the increase of gestational age, and the TG level in twin pregnancy complicated with GDM or PIH was higher than that in twin pregnancy without GDM or PIH, indicating that the blood lipid metabolism was related to the occurrence of GDM and PIH in twin pregnancy to some extent.

Ample evidence supports the importance of the microbiota on human health and disease. Recent studies suggest that extracellular vesicles are an important means of bacterial-host communication, in part via the transport of small RNAs (sRNAs). ⋯ Validation of these potential interactions using reproducible experimental methods is essential to move the field forward. This review will cover the evidence of interspecies communication via sRNAs, bioinformatic tools currently available to identify potential bacterial sRNA-host (specifically, human) mRNA interactions, and experimental methods to identify and validate those interactions.
