ReviewHerpes zoster subunit vaccine for the prevention of herpes zoster.
Published literature on the efficacy and safety of the herpes zoster (HZ) subunit vaccine (HZ/su vaccine) in reducing the risks of HZ and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) in adults 50 years of age and older, as well as the vaccine's properties and efficacy relative to live attenuated vaccine, is reviewed. ⋯ HZ/su vaccine is a recently approved, preferred option to reduce the risks of HZ and PHN in adults 50 years of age or older. Pain at the injection site is the most common AE associated with use of the vaccine.

Results of a systematic literature review to identify roles for emergency medicine (EM) pharmacists beyond traditionally reported activities and to quantify the benefits of these roles in terms of patient outcomes are reported. ⋯ A systematic review of the literature revealed 3 key emerging areas of practice for the EM pharmacist that are associated with positive patient outcomes. These included involvement in management of critically ill patients, AMS roles, and ordering of home medications in the ED.

Case ReportsCatastrophic circulatory collapse after inadvertent subcutaneous injection of treprostinil.
A case of life-threatening cardiovascular collapse after inadvertent subcutaneous injection of undiluted treprostinil is reported. ⋯ A patient who received an inadvertent overdose of subcutaneous treprostinil experienced cardiovascular collapse requiring aggressive resuscitation measures. Successful management of the patient was largely supportive, including fluids, bolus-dose vasopressors, multiple high-dose vasopressor infusions, ondansetron, acetaminophen, and loperamide.

Implementation and quality assessment of a pharmacy services call center for outpatient pharmacies and specialty pharmacy services in an academic health system.
The implementation and quality assessment of a pharmacy services call center (PSCC) for outpatient pharmacies and specialty pharmacy services within an academic health system are described. ⋯ The design and implementation of the PSCC have significantly improved the health system's patient experiences, efficiency, and quality.

Controlling postoperative use of i.v. acetaminophen at an academic medical center.
Results of an interprofessional formulary initiative to decrease postoperative prescribing of i.v. acetaminophen are reported. ⋯ An interprofessional initiative at a large medical center reduced postoperative use of i.v. acetaminophen by more than 80% and yielded over $400,000 in annual cost savings.
