Review Meta Analysis
A meta-analysis examining the association between the MUC5B rs35705950 T/G polymorphism and susceptibility to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
To explore whether the mucin (MUC) 5B rs35705950 T/G polymorphism confers susceptibility to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). ⋯ The MUC5B rs35705950 T/G polymorphism confers susceptibility to IPF in Europeans and Asians, but is not associated with susceptibility to CTD-ILD.

Chronic pulmonary inflammation has been consistently shown to increase the risk of lung cancer. Therefore, assessing the molecular links between the two diseases and identification of chemopreventive agents that inhibit inflammation-driven lung tumorigenesis is indispensable. ⋯ To our knowledge, this is the first report that provides insight into genes that are differentially expressed during inflammation-driven lung tumorigenesis and the modulation of these genes by chemopreventive agents.

We have previously demonstrated that a stable synthetic analog of 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE), N-(20-hydroxyeicosa-5[Z],14[Z]-dienoyl)glycine (5,14-HEDGE), which mimics the effects of endogenously produced 20-HETE, prevents vascular hyporeactivity, hypotension, tachycardia, inflammation, and mortality in a rodent model of septic shock. The present study was performed to determine whether decreased renal and cardiovascular expression and activity of myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88)/transforming growth factor-activated kinase 1 (TAK1)/inhibitor of κB (IκB) kinase β (IKKβ)/IκB-α/nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway and reduced circulating microRNA (miR)-150, miR-223, and miR-297 expression levels participate in the protective effect of 5,14-HEDGE against hypotension, tachycardia, and inflammation in response to systemic administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). ⋯ These results suggest that downregulation of MyD88/TAK1/IKKβ/IκB-α/NF-κB pathway as well as decreased circulating miR-150, miR-223, and miR-297 expression levels participate in the protective effect of 5,14-HEDGE against hypotension, tachycardia, and inflammation in the rat model of septic shock.

We investigated whether p-synephrine exerts potent anti-inflammatory effects against acute lung injury (ALI) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in vivo, and we further investigated the inhibitory mechanism of p-synephrine in LPS-induced ALI. ⋯ These results suggested that the inhibition of NF-κB activation and the regulation of SOD are involved in the mechanism of p-synephrine's protection against ALI.

Antioxidant transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) has been shown in our previous studies to play an important role in protection against spinal cord injury (SCI) induced inflammatory response. The objective of this study was to test whether curcumin, a novel Nrf2 activator, can protect the spinal cord against SCI-induced inflammatory damage. ⋯ Post-SCI curcumin administration attenuates the inflammatory response in the injured spinal cord, and this may be a mechanism whereby curcumin improves the outcome following SCI.
