Heparin-binding protein (HBP) is a potent inducer of increased vascular permeability. The purpose of this study was to examine plasma levels of HBP in patients with shock. ⋯ HBP is elevated in patients with shock from septic and non-septic etiologies. Future investigations are required to define the functional role of HBP in patients with shock.

The endotoxin tolerance phenotype is characterized with decreased inflammation and increased phagocytosis. We hypothesized that endotoxin tolerance would provide protective effects on experimental sepsis with multiple organ injuries induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). ⋯ The beneficial effects of endotoxin tolerance indicate the potential of immunomodulatory strategies in the management of severe sepsis.

The anti-inflammatory effect of methyl-1-hydroxy-2-naphthoate (MHNA), a novel naphthol derivative, was evaluated in the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory response in murine macrophages. ⋯ MHNA inhibits the LPS-induced inflammatory response in murine macrophages via suppression of NF-κB and MAPKs signaling pathways activation.

We aimed to investigate the regulation and contribution of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and sFlt-1(1-3) to human monocytic THP-1 migration. ⋯ This study demonstrated that VEGF is able to elicit a migratory response in THP-1 cells, and that sFlt-1(1-3) is an effective inhibitor of THP-1 migration towards VEGF.
