Venous thromboembolism in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases: a case-control study of risk factors.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a well-known risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Existing guidelines for thromboprophylaxis in hospitalized patients do not extend to other clinical scenarios that may also be associated with VTE risk. Our aim was to estimate the fraction of VTE events in patients with IBD that could be prevented. ⋯ A substantial portion of VTE events in patients with IBD occurred in clinical scenarios is not routinely recommended for thromboprophylaxis. Further investigation of primary prophylaxis for patients with IBD in high-risk outpatients may be warranted.

Cannabis use provides symptom relief in patients with inflammatory bowel disease but is associated with worse disease prognosis in patients with Crohn's disease.
Cannabinoids are used by patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) to alleviate their symptoms. Little is known on patient motivation, benefit, or risks of this practice. Our aim was to assess the extent and motives for Cannabis use in patients with IBD and the beneficial and adverse effects associated with self-administration of Cannabis. ⋯ Cannabis use is common in patients with IBD and subjectively improved pain and diarrheal symptoms. However, Cannabis use was associated with higher risk of surgery in patients with Crohn's disease. Patients using Cannabis should be cautioned about potential harm, until clinical trials evaluate efficacy and safety.

Frequency, risk factors, and adverse sequelae of bone loss in patients with ostomy for inflammatory bowel diseases.
Bone loss in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with ostomy has not been systemically studied. The aims of the study were to evaluate the frequency, risk factors, and sequelae of bone loss in patients with IBD and stomas and to monitor the change in bone mineral density (BMD) over time after ostomy. ⋯ Low BMD was common in patients with IBD after ostomy, largely based on the findings in patients with CD with ileostomy. Fragility fracture was 5 times more frequent in patients with ostomy with low BMD compared with those with normal BMD. The low BMD was associated with a low body mass index. Screening and surveillance of BMD should routinely be performed, particularly in these patients at risk. Bone mass tends to stabilize over time after stoma.

Cumulative incidence and risk factors for hospitalization and surgery in a population-based cohort of ulcerative colitis.
We sought to identify clinical and demographic features influencing hospitalization and colectomy in a population-based inception cohort of ulcerative colitis. ⋯ Colectomy rates were comparable to reports from northern Europe. The numbers of hospitalizations show a decreasing trend. Male gender and being diagnosed in the 2000 to 2004 period predicted colectomy while extensive colitis predicted future hospitalizations.
