Measurement of health-related quality of life with the Dutch translated Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire before and after treatment.
This clinical trial evaluated the use of the Dutch translated Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (AVVQ) and SF-36 before and after treatment in patients with clinical-severity classes 1-6 venous disease of the lower limb. ⋯ This study established the use of the Dutch translated AVVQ as a valid, health-related quality of life (QOL) questionnaire for measuring QOL before and after treatment in patients with clinical-severity classes 1-6 venous disease of the leg.

Review Meta AnalysisA systematic review and meta-analysis of 30-day outcomes following staged carotid artery stenting and coronary bypass.
To determine the overall operative risk of cardiovascular events in patients with combined cardiac and carotid artery disease undergoing staged carotid artery stenting (CAS) and coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). ⋯ In a cohort of predominantly asymptomatic patients with unilateral carotid disease, the 30-day risk of death/any stroke was 9.1%. These data are comparable to previous systematic reviews evaluating the roles of staged and synchronous carotid endarterectomy (CEA) plus CABG, and suggest that staged CAS plus CABG is an attractive and less invasive alternative to CEA plus CABG. However, it remains questionable whether the observed 9% risks can be justified in any asymptomatic patient with unilateral carotid disease.

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) of the anterior accessory great saphenous vein (AAGSV): abolition of sapheno-femoral reflux with preservation of the great saphenous vein.
During surgery for sapheno-femoral junction (SFJ) and anterior accessory great saphenous vein (AAGSV) reflux, many surgeons also strip the great saphenous vein (GSV). This study assesses the short-term efficacy (abolition of reflux on Duplex ultrasound) of endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) of the AAGSV with preservation of a competent GSV in the treatment of varicose veins occurring due to isolated AAGSV incompetence. ⋯ AAGSV EVLA abolishes SFJ reflux, improves symptom scores and is, therefore, suitable for treating varicose veins associated with AAGSV reflux.

Venous thrombo-embolism (VTE) has traditionally been considered rare in Asia. Recent reports from Hong Kong and Singapore indicate an increasing incidence of VTE. ⋯ VTE is no longer a rarity in India. General surgical operations are the most common causes of postoperative DVT. Pulmonary embolism continues to be 'suspected' more often than it is diagnosed.
