A review of the surgical management of penetrating carotid artery injuries in the Trauma Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, is presented. ⋯ operative repair offers the best chance of recovery.

to examine the effects of type of anaesthesia on cerebral blood flow during carotid endarterectomy (CEA). ⋯ LA CEA is associated with better preservation of the ipsilateral cerebral circulation and increased tolerance of the effects of carotid clamping. Changes in MCAV(mean) cannot be explained by variations in blood pressure between the two techniques.

to evaluate early and long term results of thrombolysis and surgery in acutely thrombosed popliteal artery aneurysms. ⋯ in patients with acute leg ischaemia due to thrombosis of popliteal artery aneurysms, preoperative thrombolysis can be considered a safe and effective alternative to urgent surgery.
