Disturbed circadian motor activity patterns in postcardiotomy delirium.
More than 20% of patients of 65 years or older may develop a delirium after cardiac surgery. Patients with delirium frequently show a disturbed 24-hr motor activity pattern, but objective and quantitative data are scarce. Our aim was to quantify motor activity patterns in elderly patients with or without a postcardiotomy delirium after elective cardiac surgery. ⋯ Actigraphy proves to be a valuable instrument for evaluating motor activity patterns in relation to clinical state in patients with a postcardiotomy delirium.

Comparative StudySeverity of depressive symptoms as predictor of impairment of quality of life in chronic migraine: comparison with episodic migraine.
To identify predictors of quality of life (QoL) in episodic migraine (EM) and chronic migraine (CM), 116 migraineurs were evaluated using the Headache Needs Assessment (HANA). QoL was significantly more impaired in patients with CM. ⋯ QoL was also poorer in women and in those with greater headache intensity and nausea associated with headache in the total sample. The present findings suggest a specific role for depressive symptoms in impaired QoL in CM sufferers.

Electronic media use and suicidal ideation in Japanese adolescents.
The present study found that a lifetime history of suicidal ideation may be significantly associated with a history of searching the Internet for information about suicide or self-injury, experiences of anxiety or emotional pain related to the use of electronic media, and adolescents' distrust of the people around them. The impact of experiences using electronic media on suicidal ideation among Japanese adolescents is discussed.

Exploring the burden of the primary family caregivers of schizophrenia patients in Taiwan.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the burden of the primary family caregivers of schizophrenia patients and the factors that affect caregiver burden. ⋯ The physical and mental health condition of the primary family caregiver of schizophrenia patients was the most important factor determining the caregiver burden level. Comprehensive multidisciplinary care of chronic schizophrenia patients is needed, care that supports the needs and improves the psychiatric symptoms of the patients, helps to decrease the caregiver burden level, and facilitates family participation in treatment.

Decrease in heart rate variability response to task is related to anxiety and depressiveness in normal subjects.
Previous studies have shown that heart rate variability (HRV) measurement is useful in investigating the pathophysiology of various psychiatric disorders. The present study further examined its usefulness in evaluating the mental health of normal subjects with respect to anxiety and depressiveness. ⋯ Decreased HRV response to task application is related to anxiety and depressiveness. Decreased autonomic responsiveness could serve as a sign of psychological dysfunction.
