Case ReportsPilot study of deep brain stimulation in refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder ethnic Chinese patients.
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) is a promising alternative to ablative surgery in treatment of refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A pilot study was conducted to assess 15-month outcomes of DBS in patients with refractory OCD in Taiwan. ⋯ We confirm that DBS of the VC/VS appears to be beneficial for improvements in function and mood among patients with treatment-resistant OCD. Compared to previous studies examining the therapeutic effects of DBS, no serious adverse effects were observed.

Clinical TrialNegative impact of migraine on quality of life after 4 weeks of treatment in patients with major depressive disorder.
The impact of migraine on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) after acute antidepressant treatment has not been addressed. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether or not the negative impact of migraine on HRQoL among outpatients with MDD continued to have an effect after 4 weeks of venlafaxine treatment. ⋯ Migraine may have a negative impact on the improvement of partial SF-36 subscales, especially on functional recovery, after acute treatment among outpatients with MDD. Whether additional intervention besides antidepressant treatment for migraine is indicated may need further study.

Impact of feedback from pharmacists in reducing antipsychotic polypharmacy in schizophrenia.
The objective was to examine effects of active interventions on physician's prescribing of antipsychotic polypharmacy. Prescriptions for patients with schizophrenia at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Canada were collected in 2006 (n = 648) and 2008 (n = 778). ⋯ A three-fold decrease in the prevalence of antipsychotic polypharmacy was observed between 2006 (18.3%) and 2008 (6.6%). Thus, active monitoring of prescriptions with educational interventions could reduce antipsychotic polypharmacy.

Increased self-transcendence in patients with intractable diseases.
Patients with intractable disease require long-term treatment and experience repeated bouts of progressive symptoms and resolutions, which cause them severe suffering. The aim of this study was to elucidate the concepts of self-transcendence and subjective well-being in patients with intractable disease. ⋯ As a life-changing experience, an intractable disease may influence an increase in self-transcendence. The results also showed that there was a strong correlation between self-transcendence and respondents' subjective well-being. Our results suggest that patients with life-changing intractable disease can have a high level of self-transcendence, which may lead them to regain mental well-being, and increase their psychological health even in situations that cause physical and mental suffering.
