Short-stay units (SSUs) have been developed as an alternative to conventional hospitalisation. The aim of this study is to analyse the impact of short-stay units on the quality of medical care in Spain. ⋯ SSUs may be able to effectively improve clinical care in selected patients, and may help to shorten overall length of stay. Further research is needed in order to define their exact role and to establish their optimal model.

To conduct a pilot study of telephone consultation in the paediatric population of an urban health centre. To evaluate the telephone consultation as an effective tool when it comes to exercising prior triage of patients requiring urgent attention. ⋯ The pilot project had a high level of satisfaction and resolution, demonstrating cost savings by reducing 55% of face to face visits, with a saving of 35.2 euros per telephone consultation. A teleconsultation model for dealing with emergencies in primary care by telephone would be comparable to a practice staffed by trained paediatric nurses.

To develop and validate a rapid administration questionnaire to assess patient satisfaction with the pharmaceutical care (PhC) service in Spanish community pharmacies. ⋯ The questionnaire developed has provided evidence of content validity, internal structure validity, and reliability to assess the patient satisfaction with the PhC service in Spanish community pharmacies.

To describe the results of a voluntary reporting system for adverse events in a Patient Safety Program of an occupational injuries mutual insurance company. ⋯ Most of the notifications were preventable incidents, and recorded by first-level medical care. The reporting questionnaire was shown to be a valid tool in our work environment for the detection of adverse events in the care process.
