Cannabis is often used to manage pain among persons who suffer from chronic pain. Yet, despite much literature suggesting cannabis use problems are associated with mental health problems, little work has examined mechanisms of this relationship among a chronic pain population. Chronic pain is also associated with emotion dysregulation. ⋯ Results indicated a significant indirect relationship between cannabis use problems and anxiety [95% CI (.03, .05)], depression [95% CI (.03, .06)], and suicidal ideation [95% CI (.01, .01)] via emotion dysregulation. Tests of specificity suggested potential for a bi-directional effect for suicidal ideation (p < .001). Initial findings suggest that emotion dysregulation may be an important mechanism in the relationship between cannabis use problems and mental health among adults with chronic pain.

Chronic pain is a cause of morbidity, interference with daily functioning, decreased health and quality of life. Purpose in life acts as a protective factor and mitigates these consequences. ⋯ Results showed that purpose in life independently contributed to psychological morbidity and to mental quality of life, but not to physical quality of life, after controlling for pain-related variables. Results showed the relevance of purpose in life to identify patients at risk of developing psychological morbidity and decreased quality of life, suggestting the need to intervene in chronic pain, specifically on purpose in life, to prevent psychological morbidity and promote quality of life, in this population.

Work-family conflict among underground coal miners not only leads their mental disorders but also may cause coal accidents. The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between Work-family conflict (WFC) and mental health, testing the Psychological capital (PsyCap) plays a moderating role in this relationship. The cross-sectional survey was performed in Shanxi Province, China during the August to October 2017. 986 miners from five coal mines were recruited in this study. ⋯ Psychological capital (PsyCap) moderated the relationship between WFC and Anxiety, Depressive Symptoms. The findings illustrate that psychological capital was an important way to improve miners' mental health. Managers should promote organization support and investment in PsyCap to improve miners' mental health.

Self-management of a disability consists of treatment adherence, obtaining information about the disease and treatment options, caring for oneself, participating in decisions, and maintaining social relationships and emotional balance. Understanding and measuring an individual's beliefs about their ability to successfully self-manage and live well with a disability allows researchers and clinicians to better target interventions aimed at increasing disability management self-efficacy (DMSE). The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between demographic and clinical indicators, and self-efficacy for DMSE in individuals with chronic physical conditions. ⋯ Satisfaction with participation in social roles, resilience, pain interference, social support, and fatigue were statistically significant. Better social functioning, more resilience, and less pain and fatigue were most strongly associated with DMSE. Interventions aimed at increasing DMSE should include strategies for improving social participation.

Emergency medicine has one of the highest rates of burnout of all medical specialties. Recent research has identified putative sources of burnout in emergency medicine, including stress of overnight shifts, psychological demands of handling emergency patients, and perceived poor departmental support systems. This burnout is detrimental to the quality of patient care, and thus represents an important target to simultaneously improve both physician wellness and patient outcomes. ⋯ These factors included personal spirituality, utility of mindfulness techniques, sleep quality, perceptions of home life, and the presence of institutional debriefing procedures. This work identified five resilience factors that may enable emergency medicine physicians to mitigate the impact of their burnout on their work and patient care. Promoting these resilience factors represent targets for institutional-level interventions to improve both physician wellness and patient outcomes.
