Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2 mapping utilizes the T2 values for quantification of moisture content and collagen sequence breakdown. Recently, attempts at quantification of lumbar disc degeneration through MRI T2 mapping have been reported. We conducted an analysis of the relationship between T2 values of degenerated intervertebral discs (IVD) and chronic low back pain (CLBP). ⋯ The results indicated a correlation between posterior AF degeneration and CLBP. This study suggests that MRI T2 mapping could be used as a quantitative method for diagnosing discogenic pain.

Use of a tourniquet in total knee arthroplasty: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
A tourniquet is commonly used in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, the effectiveness and safety of tourniquets are debated. We performed this study to investigate whether patients benefit from the use of tourniquets in TKA. ⋯ Data from this meta-analysis indicate that patients may benefit from the use of a tourniquet in TKA; however, it use is accompanied by disadvantages and complications. Because of the very low-evidence quality and lower grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluation recommendation strength, no guidelines can be developed based on current evidence.

Fragility fractures of the pelvic ring (FFP) are increasing in frequency and require challenging treatment. A new comprehensive classification considers both fracture morphology and degree of instability. The classification system also provides recommendations for type and invasiveness of treatment. ⋯ For FFP Type II lessions, percutaneous fixation techniques should be considered after a trial of conservative treatment. FFP Type III lesions need open reduction and internal fixation, whereas FFP Type IV lesions require bilateral fixation. The respective advantages and limitations of dorsal (sacroiliac screw fixation, sacroplasty, bridging plate fixation, transsacral positioning bar placement, angular stable plate) and anterior (external fixation, angular stable plate fixation, retrograde transpubic screw fixation) pelvic fixations are described.

The objective is to integrate all the eligible studies and investigate whether the programmed cell death 1 (PDCD-1) gene polymorphisms (PD 1.3 G/A, PD 1.5 C/T, and PD 1.9 C/T polymorphism) are correlated with ankylosing spondylitis risk (AS). Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease, and several genetic and environmental factors play an important role in the development and progression of AS. Significant associations between PDCD-1 gene polymorphisms (PD 1.3 G/A, PD 1.5 C/T or PD 1.9 C/T) and AS risk have been reported; however, some of these results are controversial. ⋯ The PD 1.9 C/T polymorphism may be involved in susceptibility to AS, particular in Asian populations; however, no significant associations were found between PD 1.3 G/A, PD 1.5 C/T polymorphisms, and AS risk in either Asians or Caucasians.
