To determine the hypothesis that genetic variations of the lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) gene influence risk for the development of sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction (MOD) in patients with major trauma. ⋯ The rs2232618 polymorphism is a functional SNP and confers host susceptibility to sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction in patients with major trauma.

To analyze the histopathological indicators significantly associated with surgical outcome and the pattern of recurrence in the setting of preoperative gemcitabine-based chemoradiation therapy (CRT) and subsequent pancreatectomy. ⋯ The status of nodal involvement and perineural invasion in resected specimens are significantly associated with DFS and clearly predict the pattern of recurrence in the setting of a preoperative gemcitabine-based CRT strategy. To analyze and compare postoperative occurrences following ventral hernia repairs (VHRs) using mesh in clean-contaminated and contaminated wounds. ⋯ There is a significant increase in risk of postoperative occurrences following VHRs using mesh in clean-contaminated and contaminated cases relative to clean cases. We recommend avoiding the use of mesh in any level of contamination.

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) metastasis size is an important predictor of non-SLN involvement. The goal of this study was to construct a nomogram incorporating SLN metastasis size to accurately predict non-SLN involvement in patients with SLN-positive disease. ⋯ SLN metastasis size is an important predictor for identifying non-SLN disease. In this study, we incorporated SLN metastasis size into a nomogram that accurately predicts the likelihood of having additional axillary metastasis and can assist in personalizing surgical management of breast cancer.
