To estimate the effect of preventing postoperative complications on readmission rates and costs. ⋯ This study provides substantial evidence that efforts to reduce postoperative readmissions should begin by focusing on postoperative complications that can be reliably and validly measured. Such an approach will not eliminate all postoperative readmissions but will likely have a major effect on readmission rates.

To identify a high-risk group of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), independently arising in the pancreas with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN), using histopathologic subtypes. ⋯ Mucin expression patterns demonstrate that PDAC without GNAS mutations of an aggressive phenotype frequently arise in the pancreas with benign gastric-type IPMN in the absence of GNAS mutations.

This study aimed to assess the prognostic impact of liver metastases (LM) in patients with colorectal peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) who underwent complete cytoreductive surgery and resection of LM, followed by intraperitoneal chemotherapy. ⋯ This case-control study seems to confirm that prolonged survival can be achieved in highly selected patients operated on for limited PC and fewer than 3 LM.

We tested the hypothesis that the matricellular protein thrombospondin-1 (TSP1), through binding to and activation of the cell receptor CD47, inhibits basal and thermal-mediated cutaneous blood flow. ⋯ These results suggest that secreted TSP1, via its cognate receptor CD47, acutely modulates SkBF. These data further support therapeutically targeting CD47 to mitigate age-associated loss of SkBF and maximize wound healing.

This study aimed to assess kidney dysfunction in general surgical patients and examine the effect on postoperative mortality and morbidity. ⋯ Renal insufficiency may be underrecognized in the general and vascular (noncardiac) surgery population, is a leading independent predictor of poor early postoperative outcomes, and should be routinely assessed in the preoperative setting.
