Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Saline versus Plasma-Lyte A in initial resuscitation of trauma patients: a randomized trial.
We sought to compare resuscitation with 0.9% NaCl versus Plasma-Lyte A, a calcium-free balanced crystalloid solution, hypothesizing that Plasma-Lyte A would better correct the base deficit 24 hours after injury. ⋯ Compared with 0.9% NaCl, resuscitation of trauma patients with Plasma-Lyte A resulted in improved acid-base status and less hyperchloremia at 24 hours postinjury. Further studies are warranted to evaluate whether resuscitation with Plasma-Lyte A improves clinical outcomes.

Clinical Trial
Occurrence of multiorgan dysfunction in pediatric burn patients: incidence and clinical outcome.
To examine the incidence of single or multiple organ failure postburn and its resultant clinical outcomes during acute hospitalization. ⋯ This is the first large study in burn patients to determine the incidence of organ-specific failure and outcome. The results of this study confirmed the expected chronologic incidence of organ-specific failure and yield the long-term mortality from liver and renal failure.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative chest computed tomography (CT) and the risk factors for lung metastasis in colon cancer patients without liver metastasis who had negative findings on initial chest X-ray (CXR). ⋯ Preoperative staging chest CT is not beneficial to colon cancer patients without liver metastasis and lymph node metastasis suggested on abdominal and pelvic CT who had negative finding on initial CXR.

Observational Study
Surgical ward round quality and impact on variable patient outcomes.
To investigate the relationship between variability in surgical ward round (WR) quality and clinical outcomes. ⋯ Patient assessment during WRs is variable. Less thorough WRs result in delayed diagnoses and preventable complications, and they negatively affect outcomes. Focusing on WR quality and training may improve patient care.
