Bile Acids Increase Independently From Hypocaloric Restriction After Bariatric Surgery.
To measure changes in the composition of serum bile acids (BA) and the expression of Takeda G-protein-coupled receptor 5 (TGR5) acutely after bariatric surgery or caloric restriction. ⋯ The levels of serum BA increase after bariatric surgery independently from caloric restriction, whereas the level of WAT TGR5 protein is unaffected.

To evaluate the sites and frequencies of overall and initial lymph node (LN) metastases (LNMs) of clinical T1N0 esophageal cancer. ⋯ A clinical diagnosis of T1N0 is not sufficiently accurate, and therefore, it is unacceptable to omit LN dissection or minimize the prophylactic radiation field. SLNs, which are not location restricted, should be surveyed in all 3 fields.

Predicting Mid-term All-cause Mortality in Patients Undergoing Elective Endovascular Repair of a Descending Thoracic Aortic Aneurysm.
All-cause mortality in patients after repair of aortic aneurysms of the descending thoracic aorta thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) is relatively high at mid-term follow-up. The aim of this study was to derive and validate a system that could predict all-cause mortality after TEVAR to aid with patient selection. ⋯ Identifying patients with a limited life expectancy after TEVAR is possible using a preoperative risk-stratification system. This information can be used to inform decision making regarding when and whether to proceed with TEVAR.

Prevalence of Barrett Esophagus in Adolescents and Young Adults With Esophageal Atresia.
To study the prevalence of Barrett esophagus (BE) (gastric and/or intestinal metaplasia) in adolescents treated for esophageal atresia (EA). ⋯ Patients with EA are at high risk of persistent GERD and BE. The development of BE is related to GERD history. Long-term systematic follow-up of the esophageal mucosa including multistaged biopsies is required, even in asymptomatic patients. (NCT02495051).

To compare sarcopenia and frailty for outcome prediction in surgical intensive care unit (SICU) patients. ⋯ Bedside diagnosis of sarcopenia by ultrasound predicts adverse discharge disposition in SICU patients equally well as frailty. Sarcopenia assessed by ultrasound may be utilized as rapid beside modality for risk stratification of critically ill patients.
