This study investigates the predictive value of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) for good pathological response at different time points during and after preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT) in locally advanced rectal cancer. ⋯ This study shows that DW-MRI is feasible to select good treatment responders during preoperative CRT for locally advanced rectal cancer.

To develop and provide validity and feasibility evidence for the QUality of Information Transfer (QUIT) tool. ⋯ A validated tool to assess information transfer for deteriorating surgical patients was developed and tested using simulation and real-time clinical scenarios. It may improve the quality and safety of patient care on the surgical ward.

To examine the outcomes of prolonged (≥14 days) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (P-ECMO) for adult severe respiratory failure and to assess characteristics associated with survival. ⋯ Prolonged ECMO use for adult respiratory failure was associated with a lower (45.4%) hospital survival rate, compared with prior reported survival rates of short duration ECMO. Prolonged ECMO survival significantly increased in recent years, and increasing ECMO duration did not alter the survival fraction in the 1989 to 2013 study cohort. Although P-ECMO survival rates are less than short ECMO runs, P-ECMO support is justified.

To determine the role of cell swelling in severe hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation injury. ⋯ Ischemia-induced lethal cell swelling during hemorrhagic shock is a key mediator of resuscitation injury, which can be prevented by cell impermeants in low-volume resuscitation solutions.

To prevent posthepatectomy acute liver failure after extended resection by treatment with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). ⋯ MSCs ameliorated hepatic dysfunction and improved liver regeneration after extended resection by paracrine mechanisms. They may represent a new therapeutic option to treat posthepatectomy acute liver failure.
