Two Year Outcomes of Prehabilitation Among Obese Patients with Ventral Hernias: A Randomized Controlled Trial (NCT02365194).
To determine if preoperative nutritional counseling and exercise (prehabilitation) improve outcomes in obese patients seeking ventral hernia repair (VHR)? ⋯ There is no difference in 2-year outcomes of obese patients seeking VHR who undergo prehabilitation versus standard care. Prehabilitation may not be warranted in obese patients undergoing elective VHR.Clinical Trial Registration: This trial was registered with clinicaltrials.gov (NCT02365194).

Preoperative Single-Dose Methylprednisolone Prevents Surgical Site Infections After Major Liver Resection: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a single preoperative dose of methylprednisolone for preventing postoperative complications after major liver resections. ⋯ A single preoperative dose of methylprednisolone significantly reduces the length of hospital stay, postoperative serum bilirubin, and PT-INR, as well as infectious and overall complications following major hepatectomy.

The Detrimental Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Major Trauma Outcomes in the Netherlands: A Comprehensive Nationwide Study.
To evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the outcome of major trauma patients in the Netherlands. ⋯ The COVID-19 peak had an adverse effect on trauma care as major trauma patients were less often admitted to ICU and specifically those with minor through moderate brain injury had higher mortality rates.

Intestinal Oxygenation and Survival After Surgery for Necrotizing Enterocolitis: An Observational Cohort Study.
To assess whether regional intestinal oxygen saturation (rintSO2) and regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rcSO2) measurements aid in estimating survival of preterm infants after surgery for NEC. ⋯ Measuring rintSO2, but not rcSO2, seems of added value to clinical variables in estimating survival of preterm infants after surgery for NEC. This may help clinicians in deciding whether surgery is feasible and to better counsel parents about their infants' chances of survival.

Surgeon scientists bring to bear highly specialized talent and innovative and impactful solutions for complicated clinical problems. Our objective is to inform and provide framework for early stage surgeon scientist training and support. ⋯ This guidance enhances awareness of essential education, communication, infrastructure, resources, and advocacy by surgery leaders and other stakeholders to promote quality research training in residency and to re-invigorate the surgeon scientist pipeline.
