The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that bariatric surgery decreases the risk of esophageal and cardia adenocarcinoma. ⋯ Gastric bypass surgery may counteract the development of esophageal adenocarcinoma in morbidly obese individuals.

Pancreatic acinar content (Ac) has been associated with pancreas-specific complications after pancreatoduodenectomy. The aim of this study was to improve the prediction ability of intraoperative risk stratification by integrating the pancreatic acinar score. ⋯ The risk of pancreas-specific complications appears to be dichotomous-either high or low-according to the acinar score, a tool to better target the application of mitigation strategies in cases of intermediate macroscopic features.

We conducted a large-scale investigation of the systemic and adipose tissue-specific alterations in a clinical population of burn patients to identify factors that may influence hypermetabolism. ⋯ We provide novel insight toward the effect of burns on adipokine release, inflammatory signaling pathways, and adipose heterogeneity over the trajectory of acute and chronic stages.

A scoping review of the literature was conducted to identify intraoperative artificial intelligence (AI) applications for robotic surgery under development and categorize them by (1) purpose of the applications, (2) level of autonomy, (3) stage of development, and (4) type of measured outcome. ⋯ Clinical evaluation of intraoperative AI applications for robotic surgery is still in its infancy and most applications have a low level of autonomy. With increasing levels of autonomy, the evaluation focus seems to shift from AI-specific metrics to process outcomes, although common standards are needed to allow comparison between systems.

Safety and Efficacy of Iltamiocel Cellular Therapy for the Treatment of Fecal Incontinence. Results of a Phase 1/2 Study.
To examine the safety and efficacy of iltamiocel, an investigational cellular therapy of autologous muscle-derived cells, as a treatment for fecal incontinence (FI) in adults. ⋯ The administration of iltamiocel cellular therapy is safe. Iltamiocel shows promise for significantly improving fecal incontinence symptoms and quality of life.
