To describe PAC utilization and associated payments for patients undergoing common elective procedures. ⋯ We found both modifiable (eg, obesity) and nonmodifiable (eg, female sex) patient factors that were associated with PAC. Optimizing patients to reduce PAC utilization requires an understanding of patient risk factors and systems and processes to address these factors.

The aim of this study was to estimate the association between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) or death after ambulatory noncardiac surgery. ⋯ Ambulatory surgery was associated with a low risk of major postoperative events. This risk was higher for people with CKD, which may inform their perioperative shared decision-making and management.

Assess cost-effectiveness and -utility associated with posttransplant HCC surveillance compared to standard follow-up. ⋯ Performing posttransplant HCC surveillance offers marginal clinical benefits and increases costs. Although expert consensus supports surveillance, results of this decision analysis raise doubt regarding the utility of such recommendations and support ongoing need for prospective clinical trials.

The aim of this study was to estimate risks of myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and cardiovascular-related and all-cause mortality after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) for obesity compared with nonop-erated obese patients and matched nonobese population controls. ⋯ RYGB for obesity might not decrease the risk of ischemic stroke, but seems to decrease the risk of myocardial infarction back to population levels.

To analyze the number of endoscopic thoracic sympathectomies performed to treat hyperhidrosis in the Universal Public Health System of Brazil, the government reimbursements, and the in-hospital mortality rates. ⋯ We observed a rate of 68.44 thoracoscopic sympathectomies for hyperhidrosis' treatment per 10 million inhabitants per year. The inhospital mortality rate was very low, 0.045%, though not nil. To our knowledge, no published series is larger than ours and we are the first authors to formally report deaths after endoscopic thoracic sympathectomies to treat hyperhidrosis. Moreover, there is no other population-based study addressing costs and mortality rates of every endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for the treatment of any site of hyperhidrosis in a given period.
