To compare the rate of postoperative 30-day complications between laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD) and robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD). ⋯ RPD adoption increased compared with LPD and was associated with decreased overall complications, serious complications, and increased optimal outcome compared with LPD in 2018-2019.

To investigate whether tumor deposits (TDs) in rectal cancer are associated with increased recurrence risk and decreased survival. ⋯ This study suggests that TDs have a negative impact on the prognosis in rectal cancer. Thus, efforts should be made to diagnose TD-positive rectal cancer patients preoperatively.

We examined trainees in surgery and internal medicine who received National Institutes of Health (NIH) F32 postdoctoral awards to determine their success rates in obtaining future NIH funding. ⋯ Surgery trainees who obtain NIH F32 grants during dedicated research years are less likely to receive any form of NIH funding in the future compared with their internal medicine colleagues who received F32 grants.

To examine liver retransplantation (ReLT) over 35 years at a single center. ⋯ This represents the largest single-center ReLT report to date. Despite the increased acuity and complexity of ReLT patients, post-MELD era outcomes have improved. With careful patient selection, these results support the efficacy and survival benefit of ReLT in an acuity-based allocation environment.

We sought to characterize the association between prolonged county-level poverty with postoperative outcomes. ⋯ County-level poverty duration was associated with adverse postoperative outcomes and higher expenditures. These effects were mediated by various socioeconomic factors and were most pronounced among minority patients.
