Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) is nearly universal in patients with end-stage kidney disease. Kidney transplantation (KT) reverses HPT in many patients, but most studies have only focused on following calcium and not parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. We sought to study the prevalence of persistent HPT post-KT at our center and its effect on graft survival. ⋯ Persistent HPT is common (75%) after KT and is associated with a higher risk of allograft failure. PTH levels should be closely monitored after kidney transplantation so that patients with persistent HPT can be treated appropriately.

To investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) spectrum and complicated appendicitis and postoperative complications in pediatric patients. ⋯ Underweight, overweight, and interaction between overweight and preoperative WBC were associated with complicated appendicitis. Obesity, underweight, and interaction between underweight and preoperative WBC were associated with minor, major, and any complications. Thus, personalized clinical pathways and parental education targeting at-risk patients can minimize postoperative complications.

To characterize industry nonresearch payments made to general and fellowship-trained surgeons between 2016 and 2020. ⋯ General and fellowship-trained surgeons received substantial industry nonresearch payments. The highest-paid recipients were men. Further work is warranted in assessing how race, gender, and leadership roles influence the nature of industry payments and surgical practice. A significant decline in payments was observed early during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To determine macrophage-specific alterations in epigenetic enzyme function contributing to the development of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). ⋯ These findings identify SETDB2 as a critical regulator of macrophage-mediated protease activity in AAAs and identify SETDB2 as a mechanistic target for the management of AAAs.

Novel Gene-Modified Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy Reverses Impaired Wound Healing in Ischemic Limbs.
Here, we report a new method to increase the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) for ischemic wound healing. We tested biological effects of MSCs modified with E-selectin, a cell adhesion molecule capable of inducing postnatal neovascularization, on a translational murine model. ⋯ We establish a novel method to potentiate regenerative and proangiogenic capability of MSCs by modification with E-selectin/adeno-associated virus. This innovative therapy carries the potential as a platform worthy of future clinical studies.
