To characterize the work loads and practice patterns of general surgeons in the United States over a 3-year period (1995 to 1997). ⋯ This unique database will be useful in tracking trends over time. More importantly, it demonstrates that general surgery practice in the United States is extremely heterogeneous, a fact that must be acknowledged in any future workforce deliberations.

To evaluate the short- and long-term results of surgical reconstruction of the renal arteries, the authors review their experience with more than 600 reconstructions performed over a 12-year period. ⋯ Renal artery revascularization is a safe and durable procedure. It can be performed in selected patients for primary renovascular pathology. It can also be an adjunct to aortic reconstruction with acceptable mortality and morbidity rates.

Comparative Study
Simultaneous administration of adjuvant donor bone marrow in pancreas transplant recipients.
The effect of donor bone marrow was evaluated for its potentially favorable effect in the authors' simultaneous pancreas/kidney transplant program. ⋯ In this series, which represents the largest experience with adjuvant bone marrow infusion in pancreas recipients, there was a higher steroid withdrawal rate (p = 0.02), fewer rejection episodes, and no pancreas graft loss after 3 months in bone marrow recipients compared with contemporaneous controls. All pancreas allografts lost to chronic rejection (n = 6) were in the non-bone marrow group. Donor bone marrow administered around the time of surgery may have a protective effect in pancreas transplantation.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Risk factors for aneurysm rupture in patients kept under ultrasound surveillance. UK Small Aneurysm Trial Participants.
To investigate risk factors associated with aneurysm rupture using patients randomized into the U.K. Small Aneurysm Trial (n = 1090) or monitored for aneurysm growth in the associated study (n = 1167). ⋯ Within this cohort of patients, women had a threefold higher risk of aneurysm rupture than men. Effective control of blood pressure and cessation of smoking are likely to diminish the risk of rupture.
