Observational Study
Baseline Assessments of Psychomotor Aptitude are Associated with the Future Operative Performance of Surgical Trainees A Prospective Observational Cohort Study.
This study sought to investigate the association between validated psychomotor ability tests and future in-theater and simulated operative performance. ⋯ This study indicates that visuospatial, psychomotor, and perceptual ability testing scores are associated with the future operative performance of surgical residents.

Identifying Persistent Opioid Use After Surgery: The Reliability of Pharmacy Dispensation Databases.
The present study assessed concordance in perioperative opioid fulfillment data between Michigan's prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) and a national pharmacy prescription database. ⋯ The state PDMP appears reliable for detecting opioid fulfillment after surgery, detecting 2 times more patients with persistent opioid use compared with Surescripts.

This study analyzed the incidence and risk factors for surgical morbidities of laparoscopic living donors. ⋯ Laparoscopic living donor surgery showed excellent safety for the majority of donors, and critical complications were resolved with proper management. To minimize bile leakage, cautious surgical manipulation is needed for donors with complex hilar anatomy.

To assess whether the Surgical Apgar Score (SAS) improves re-estimation of perioperative cardiac risk. ⋯ When combined with a validated preoperative risk index, the SAS improved the accuracy of cardiac risk assessment for noncardiac surgery. Further research is needed to delineate how intraoperative data can better guide postoperative decision-making.

To identify the factors associated with days away from home in the year after hospital discharge for major surgery. ⋯ The 5 independent risk factors can be used to identify older persons who are particularly susceptible to spending a disproportionate amount of time away from home after major surgery, and a subset of these factors can also serve as targets for interventions to improve quality of life by reducing time spent in hospitals and other health care facilities.
