The aim of this study was to determine out-of-pocket costs (OOPC) in patients undergoing thyroidectomy for benign and malignant conditions in a commercially insured US population. ⋯ Despite commercial insurance coverage, patients face substantial OOPCs in the surgical management of thyroid disease in the United States.

To evaluate healthcare dependency following hepatopancreato-biliary cancer surgery in older adults (OA). ⋯ Following hepatopancreatobiliary cancer surgery, there is a high rate of long-term healthcare dependency for OA. There is an immediate high need for homecare that reaches a new baseline after 6 months, and the majority of OA will have at least 1 year with low time at home, most commonly the first year. These findings can aid in preoperative preparation and transitional care planning.

This study aims to determine if outpatient opioid prescriptions are associated with future SUD diagnoses and overdose in injured adolescents 5 years following hospital discharge. ⋯ Short-term outpatient opioid prescribing over the first few months of recovery had the largest effect on developing an SUD, while long-term prescription use over multiple years was associated with a future overdose.

The aim of this study was to analyze the outcomes of a standardized protocol using routine CSFD, neuromonitoring, LL reperfusion, and selective TASP to prevent SCI during F-BEVAR. ⋯ This prospective nonrandomized study using a standardized strategy to prevent SCI was associated with low incidence of the SCI during F-BEVAR. Permanent paraplegia occurred in 1%.

Existing methods to reconstruct vascular structures from a computerized tomography (CT) angiogram rely on contrast injection to enhance the radio-density within the vessel lumen. However, pathological changes in the vasculature may be present that prevent accurate reconstruction. In aortic aneurysmal disease, a thrombus adherent to the aortic wall within the expanding aneurysmal sac is present in >90% of cases. These deformations prevent the automatic extraction of vital clinical information by existing image reconstruction methods. ⋯ This extraction method can be used to standardize aneurysmal disease management and sets the foundation for complex geometric and morphological analysis. Furthermore, this pipeline can be extended to other vascular pathologies.
