Methods of measurements: home and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.
Optimization of clinic blood pressure measurement, progress in measurement of blood pressure outside the clinic, at home or in ambulatory conditions over 24 h, all concur to a better management of patients with hypertension. This study is aimed at briefly summarizing a few important issues in this context, and at emphasizing the work done by Tom Pickering in this field, as a tribute to his unique contributions to medical science and patient care.

Multicenter StudyEvaluation, management, and referral of elderly emergency department patients with elevated blood pressure.
To determine blood pressure (BP) reassessment rates and to describe the evaluation and outpatient referral rates of elderly emergency department (ED) patients with elevated BP. ⋯ Unlike other ED-based studies of adult hypertensive patients, BP reassessment in the elderly occurred in the majority. Referral and intervention rates, however, were low.

The effects of passive leg raising on arterial wave reflection in healthy adults.
Passive leg raising (PLR) produces hemodynamic and physiological changes related to centralizing blood volume and baroreceptor activation. ⋯ PLR decreases the amplitude and delays the onset of the reflected aortic pressure wave. This decreases wasted LV pressure energy and workload.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyEffects of force-titrated valsartan/hydrochlorothiazide versus amlodipine/hydrochlorothiazide on ambulatory blood pressure in patients with stage 2 hypertension: the EVALUATE study.
Previous studies using the combination of angiotensin-receptor blockers and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) have shown superior ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) reduction in study participants with stage 2 hypertension compared with monotherapy. ⋯ On the basis of ABP monitoring but not office measurements, the fixed-dose combination of valsartan/HCTZ is a significantly more effective treatment regimen than amlodipine/HCTZ, with similar tolerability.

Validation of the AM5600 ambulatory blood pressure monitor in children and adolescents.
We measured ambulatory blood pressure using the AM5600 in children and adolescents participating in a research study to assess the relationship of blood pressure to risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Although the use of this monitor has been previously reported in adults, it has not been validated in pediatric patients. ⋯ The AM5600 ambulatory blood pressure device is valid for measurement of blood pressure in children and adolescents.
