Primary intracranial Ewing sarcoma with an unusually aggressive course: a case report and review of the literature.
The occurrence of Ewing sarcoma-peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor as a primary intracranial tumor is very rare, with only 29 cases reported in the literature, 19 of which have included molecular studies. We present the clinical, radiologic and pathologic findings of an intracranial Ewing sarcoma in a 22-year-old woman arising from the dura over the right frontal convexity. ⋯ Additional features were detected in this tumor that are known to be associated with an unfavorable prognosis, including loss of p16 expression and gains of chromosomes 1q and 12. The patient experienced the most rapid downhill course reported to date for intracranial Ewing sarcoma, developing multiple extracranial metastases at 2 months and dying 6 months after the initial operation.

Adult onset leukodystrophy with neuroaxonal spheroids and demyelinating plaque-like lesions.
Adult onset leukodystrophy with neuroaxonal spheroids is an uncommon cause of dementia. Both hereditary (autosomal dominant) and sporadic cases have been described. A 41-year-old African woman presented with inappropriate behavior and personality change consistent with frontal lobe dysfunction. ⋯ This case had typical features of an adult onset leukodystrophy with neuroaxonal spheroids. However, we also demonstrated demyelinating plaque-like lesions, which has not been previously described. The possibility of a demyelinating origin contributing to the changes may be considered in the pathogenesis of this condition.

Neurogenesis and angiogenesis are two important processes that may contribute to the repair of brain injury after stroke. This study was designed to investigate whether transplantation of human embryonic neural stem cells (NSCs) into cortical peri-infarction 24h after ischemia effects cell proliferation in the subventricular zone (SVZ) and angiogenesis in the peri-infarct zone. NSCs were prepared from embryonic human brains at 8 weeks gestation. ⋯ In addition, angiogenesis, as indicated by BrdU and vWF staining in cortical peri-infarct regions, was augmented by 46% and 65% in NSC-grafted rats versus medium-grafted rats at 7 and 14 days, respectively (P<0.05). However, this increase became non-significant at 28 days (P>0.05). Our results indicate that NSC transplantation enhances endogenous cell proliferation in the SVZ and promotes angiogenesis in the peri-infarct zone, even if it is performed in the acute phase of ischemic injury.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether transplantation of human bone marrow stromal cell-derived Schwann cells (hBMSC-SC) promotes functional recovery after contusive spinal cord injury of adult rats. Human bone marrow stromal cells (hBMSC) were cultured from bone marrow of adult human patients and induced into Schwann cells (hBMSC-SC) in vitro. Schwann cell phenotype was confirmed by immunocytochemistry. ⋯ In electron microscopy, formation of peripheral-type myelin was recognized near the lesion epicenter in the hBMSC-SC group. Hind limb function recovered significantly in the hBMSC-SC group compared with the control group. In conclusion, the functions of hBMSC-SC are comparable to original Schwann cells in rat spinal cord injury models, and are thus potentially useful treatments for patients with spinal cord injury.
