Randomized Controlled Trial
Correlation of symptoms with vitamin D deficiency and symptom response to cholecalciferol treatment: a randomized controlled trial.
To examine the association of symptoms with vitamin D deficiency and symptom response to cholecalciferol treatment in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. ⋯ Compared with participants in the placebo group, patients in the treatment group showed mild short-term improvement in the overall fibromyalgia impact score, but did not show significant improvement in most musculoskeletal symptoms or in activities of daily living.

Comparative Study
Comparison of pheochromocytomas and abdominal and pelvic paragangliomas with head and neck paragangliomas.
To compare clinical, radiologic, and pathologic characteristics, as well as management and outcomes, in a series of pheochromocytomas, abdominal and pelvic paragangliomas, and pelvic paragangliomas with head and neck paragangliomas. ⋯ Head and neck paraganglioma are similar to pheochromocytoma and abdominal and pelvic paraganglioma in size and outcome, but occur at an older age, lack hyperadrenergic manifestations, and are more likely to have local pressure effects and result in persistent disease.

Case Reports
Diagnosing the unrecognized systemic absorption of intra-articular and epidural steroid injections.
To present a case series of patients who were misdiagnosed with endocrine disorders because of failure to recognize the systemic absorption of intra-articular and epidural steroids and to discuss the utility of performing a urine screen to detect synthetic glucocorticoids. ⋯ The potential for harm from intra-articular and epidural glucocorticoid administration is underrecognized by physicians, leading to expensive investigation, false diagnoses, and unnecessary treatment. A urine screen for synthetic glucocorticoids is a valuable adjunct towards appropriate diagnosis.

To describe a new aspect of critical care termed intensive metabolic support. ⋯ Intensive metabolic support should be an essential part of the daily treatment strategy in critical care medicine. This will involve a newfound and extensive collaboration between the endocrinologist and the intensivist. We call for well-designed future studies involving implementation of this protocol to decrease the burden of chronic critical illness.
