Comparative Study18 Cases of pulmonary Mycobacterium abscessus: Clinical difference depending on the presence or absence of Mycobacterium avium complex.
It can be difficult to treat respiratory tract infections caused by Mycobacterium abscessus (M. abscessus) as there is no established treatment strategy. Complications involving other nontuberculous mycobacterial infections such as Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) are also commonly observed. ⋯ Some cases of pulmonary M. abscessus infection progressed well without undergoing antibacterial treatment. In particular, results suggested that the clinical course of MAC-complication and non-MAC-complication cases differs.

Comparison of initial stream urine samples and cervical samples for detection of human papillomavirus.
Uterine cervical cancer is a treatable and preventable cancer. Medical efforts to reduce rates of cervical cancer focus on the promotion of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and the promotion of routine cervical cancer screening done by cervical cytology and cervical HPV testing. Urine-based HPV testing would be simple and noninvasive approach to screen for cervical cancer. ⋯ Comparing methodologies of collection of samples for HPV detection, they showed the higher agreements for almost genotypes between cervical samples and pellet fractions of urine samples. These results suggest that urine could be a good noninvasive tool to monitor HPV infection in women. Additional research in a larger and general screening population would be needed.

Clinical characteristics of 323 children with parapneumonic pleural effusion and pleural empyema due to community acquired pneumonia.
An increasing incidence of parapneumonic effusion and pleural empyema (PPE/PE) in children has been found in several studies published in the last decades. The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence, etiology, clinical features, treatment strategies and outcomes of PPE/PE in children treated in a referral pulmonary center in central Poland. ⋯ A significant increase in the incidence of PPE/PE in children with CAP treated in our institution in the last twelve years was found. S. pneumoniae was the most common causative microorganism. Antibiotic therapy with chest drain insertion ± intrapleural fibrinolysis is an effective treatment of PPE/PE and surgical intervention is seldom necessary. With proper management, the overall prognosis in children with CAP related PPE/PE is good.

Case ReportsSlowly progressive Lemierre's syndrome with orbital pain and exophthalmos.
Lemierre's syndrome is an oropharyngeal bacterial infection characterized by rapidly progressive septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. A lack of appropriate antibiotic therapy can be life-threatening. ⋯ This report is to help clinicians consider the diagnosis of Lemierre's syndrome when encountering a patient with long-lasting orbital pain and acute exophthalmos. Neck ultrasonography is useful for detecting thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein in Lemierre's syndrome patients.
