BACKGROUND The role of immune parameters in the prognosis of lung cancer has attracted more and more attention. However, studies of the association between immune scores and prognosis of lung cancer are scarce. The goal of our research was to investigate the correlation between immune scores and overall survival (OS) of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). ⋯ Calibration plots demonstrated good consistency in the probability of OS between nomogram predictions and actual observations. CONCLUSIONS Medium-immune scores are correlated with unsatisfactory prognosis in NSCLC (stage I-II) patients. In addition, the prognostic nomogram may be helpful in predicting OS for stage I and II NSCLC patients.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the effects of hirudin on the production of extracellular matrix (ECM) factors by renal tubular epithelial cells in a rat model of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and HK-2 human renal tubule epithelial cells. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into the normal control group (n=10), the normal control+hirudin group (n=10), the DKD model group (n=12) and the DKD+hirudin group (n=12). At the end of the study, renal histopathology was undertaken, and the expression of type IV collagen, fibronectin, hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha), and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) were evaluated using immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). ⋯ The expression of ECM associated proteins was increased in HK-2 cells treated with high glucose and reduced in the high glucose+shRNA HIF-1alpha group (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the expression of ECM associated proteins was increased in the HIF-1alpha over-expressed group, and decreased following treatment with hirudin (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Hirudin reduced the expression of markers of ECM by inhibiting the HIF-1alpha/VEGF signaling pathway in DKD renal tubular epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma arises from the epithelial cells of the bile ducts and is associated with poor prognosis. This study aimed to use bioinformatics analysis to identify molecular biomarkers of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma and their potential mechanisms. MATERIAL AND METHODS MicroRNA (miRNA) and mRNA microarrays from GSE53870 and GSE32879 were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. ⋯ Fourteen hub genes identified from the PPI network were associated with the regulation of cell proliferation. The overlap between hub genes and DEMs identified the estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) gene and hsa-miR-26a-5p. CONCLUSIONS Bioinformatics analysis identified ESR1 and hsa-miR-26a-5p as potential prognostic biomarkers for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

BACKGROUND The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. This paper presents an epidemiological analysis of the first phase of the COVID-19 epidemic in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was carried out between 3 and 27 March 2020 on a sample of 1389 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Poland. ⋯ CONCLUSIONS The proportion of women and men with confirmed COVID-19 infection was similar to the sex ratio in the general population. Infections were relatively less common in those aged under 20 years. The largest numbers of confirmed cases were detected in 3 of the 4 largest cities, each of which has an international airport.

The first outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) occurred in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in late 2019. The subsequent COVID-19 pandemic rapidly affected the health and economy of the world. The global approach to the pandemic was to isolate populations to reduce the spread of this deadly virus while vaccines began to be developed. ⋯ The production of mRNA-based vaccines is a promising recent development in the production of vaccines. However, there remain significant challenges in the development and testing of vaccines as rapidly as possible to control COVID-19, which requires international collaboration. This review aims to describe the background to the rationale for the development of mRNA-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccines and the current status of the mRNA-1273 vaccine.
