Impact of Dexmedetomidine on Pediatric Agitation in the Postanesthesia Care Unit.
This study aims to investigate the impacts of dexmedetomidine (DEX) on agitation in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) for pediatric patients undergoing tonsillectomy. ⋯ Low-dose DEX could significantly reduce the delirium and agitation in the PACU stage of pediatric tonsillectomy, and there were no untoward hemodynamic events in this study of 80 patients.

The Efficacy of Intraoperative EEG to Predict the Occurrence of Emergence Agitation in the Postanesthetic Room After Sevoflurane Anesthesia in Children.
Emergence agitation (EA) is common after sevoflurane anesthesia, but there are no definite predictors. This study investigated whether intraoperative electroencephalography (EEG) can indicate the occurrence of EA in children. ⋯ Children showing high-alpha powers and low theta powers (= low theta/alpha ratio) during emergence from sevoflurane anesthesia are at high risk of EA in the postanesthetic care unit.

Collaborative Development of a Perioperative Thermal Care Bundle Using the Guideline Implementability Appraisal Tool.
Perioperative hypothermia significantly increases a patient's risk of adverse complications, such as surgical site infection; morbid cardiac events, and surgical bleeding. Although guideline recommendations are relatively simple and inexpensive, they are often not adhered to in clinical practice. Knowledge tools are tangible resources that assist clinicians to provide evidence-based care. ⋯ The GuideLine Implementability Appraisal tool was a simple yet comprehensive tool that enabled the development of a care bundle by expert clinicians.

Propofol is a short-acting medication with fast cognitive and psychomotor recovery. However, patients are usually instructed not to drive a motor vehicle for 24 hours after receiving propofol. The purpose of this article was to review the evidence examining when it is safe to drive after receiving propofol for sedation for diagnostic and surgical procedures. ⋯ This limited research suggests that it may be safe for patients to drive sooner than 24 hours after receiving propofol. However, large multicenter trials using heterogenous samples using a range of propofol doses are needed to support an evidence-based revision to the current discharge guidelines for patients receiving propofol.

Interaction Between Nurse Anesthetists and Patients in a Highly Technological Environment.
To explore the specific interactions between patients and nurse anesthetists in the highly technological environment of anesthesia nursing, focusing on the time interval between patient entrance into the operating room and induction of general anesthesia. ⋯ Creating emotional energy has an important impact on the interaction between patients and nurse anesthetists. Furthermore, the motives underpinning nurse anesthetists' interactions with patients are a central constituent in developing anesthesia care.
