The Michigan Opioid Safety Score (MOSS): A Patient Safety and Nurse Empowerment Tool.
Safely treating postsurgical pain continues to be a challenge, despite more than a decade of focus on its appropriate management. Overuse of opioids and undertreatment of pain continues, as does insufficient monitoring of patients at risk for opioid and pain-related complications. ⋯ Furthermore, assessment of risk should be done with initial pain assessment and continued throughout the pain management course. The recently developed Michigan Opioid Safety Score integrates health risks and objective measures of respiratory rate and sedation, while encouraging the use of multimodal analgesia for all patients.

Rescue dose orders as an alternative to range orders: an evidence-based practice project.
Relief of pain is a fundamental aspect of optimal patient care. However, pain management in the inpatient setting is often constrained by concerns related to regulatory oversight, particularly with regard to the use of opioid dose range orders. These concerns can inadvertently result in the development of policies and practices that can negatively impact the health care team's ability to deliver optimal and individualized pain management. ⋯ The use of the rescue dose protocol was successfully implemented. Outcomes included an overall reduction in the administration of inappropriate intravenous opioids and opioid-acetaminophen combination medications, with a subsequent increase in single-entity first-line opioid analgesics. Rescue dose protocols may offer an alternative to opioid dose range orders as a means of effectively managing pain.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of P6 stimulation on postoperative nausea and vomiting in laparoscopic cholecystectomy patients.
Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) remains one of the most common postsurgical complications after anesthesia and surgery. Pericardium 6 (P6) stimulation is believed to prevent PONV and is a potential adjunctive treatment with pharmacologic agents. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of P6 stimulation on PONV occurrence to a control group not receiving the P6 stimulation in sequential female patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystecomy at a community hospital in central Florida between November 2010 and March 2013. ⋯ The results of the study demonstrate that the use of P6 stimulation in the perioperative arena is clinically meaningful; however, more research is needed with a larger sample size.

Observational StudyAn observational study of postoperative handover in anesthetic clinics; the content of verbal information and factors influencing receiver memory.
The aim was to examine the handover process in the postanesthesia care unit, how much the receiver remembered, and what factors influenced memory. ⋯ Lack of structure and long duration of the verbal handover decrease how much the receiver will remember.
