Observational StudyThe Personnel's Sevoflurane Exposure in the Postanesthesia Care Unit Measured by Photoacoustic Gas Monitoring and Hexafluoroisopropanol Biomonitoring.
Room ventilation in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) is often poor, although patients exhale anesthetic gases. We investigated the PACU personnel's environmental and biological sevoflurane (SEVO) burden during patient care. ⋯ PACU personnel were environmentally and biologically exposed to SEVO, but exposure levels were minimal according to current recommendations.

Enhancing the Quality of the Anesthesia to Postanesthesia Care Unit Patient Transfer Through Use of an Electronic Medical Record-Based Handoff Tool.
Anesthesia to postanesthesia care unit (PACU) handoffs are often incomplete, imprecise, and highly variable with respect to information transfer, and therefore can jeopardize patient safety. A standardized anesthesia to PACU electronic medical record (EMR)-based patient handoff checklist was implemented and evaluated for its effect on the information transfer. ⋯ The use of a standardized anesthesia to PACU EMR-based handoff checklist significantly increased the percent of accurate information transferred without considerably affecting the duration of the PACU handoff process.

ReviewRisk Factors for Perioperative Hypothermia: A Literature Review.
The purpose of this article was to review the literature to identify risk factors for the development of unplanned perioperative hypothermia and to evaluate the strength of the evidence for each risk factor. ⋯ It is crucial to prevention that health care providers are able to identify risk factors and implement interventions. However, vigilance in the perioperative period can only enhance patient safety when we know what to look for. More research is needed to identify risk factors of unplanned perioperative hypothermia and effectively maintain normothermia throughout the perioperative period.

Are Postoperative Clinical Outcomes Influenced by Length of Stay in the Postanesthesia Care Unit?
To compare clinical outcomes of patients who required a prolonged length of stay in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) with a control group. ⋯ Prolonged stay in the PACU for 2 or more hours because of clinical reasons appears to be associated with a higher incidence of clinical deterioration in the ward setting requiring RRT intervention within 24 hours after discharge from PACU.

Nurses' Knowledge, Attitudes, and Barriers Toward Pain Management Among Postoperative Patients in Jordan.
The purpose of this study was to measure nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and barriers regarding pain management (PM) of postoperative patients in Jordan. ⋯ Surgical nurses in this study had low knowledge levels and poor attitudes regarding PM in postoperative patients. Unless identified barriers to PM are seriously addressed, this vital aspect of holistic care will continue to be marginalized.
